This study was conducted using the Ulleung Airport construction site as a case study to analyze the effects of fill height above mean sea level and the water content of the ground on the modulus of subgrade reaction when using crushed volcanic rock fill for offshore reclamation, and to determine appropriate compaction conditions required to meet construction standards. To this end, the compaction characteristics of reclamation materials — including soils from the Gadubong excavation, ripped rock, and blasted rock — were quantitatively evaluated, and field tests were used to analyze the correlations among vibratory roller compaction passes, the distance between the sea surface and the fill surface, the water content of the fill materials, and the modulus of subgrade reaction.
Field tests were carried out at four test sites. The vertical distance from the sea surface to the fill surface was divided into four levels: 1.2 m, 1.5 m, 1.8 m, and 2.1 m. Using a 10.3 ton vibratory roller, plate load tests were performed under non-compacted conditions and with compaction passes of 5, 10, and 15, yielding a total of 64 plate load tests. In addition, changes in water content by fill height were measured 16 times across the test sites.
At STA.0+950, the modulus of subgrade reaction ranged from 59.62 MN/㎥ to 111.25 MN/㎥ (a variation of 51.63 MN/㎥), with an average water content of 16.4%. At STA.1+150, the modulus of subgrade reaction ranged from 58 MN/㎥ to 96 MN/㎥ (a variation of 38 MN/㎥), with an average water content of 20.5%. The analysis showed that water content generally decreased with increasing distance from the sea surface, although there were some differences between test sites. In general, the modulus of subgrade reaction tended to increase as the number of vibratory roller passes increased; however, in zones with high water content the increase in modulus of subgrade reaction with additional passes was not large. Conversely, when water content was low, the number of compaction passes had a significant effect on increasing the modulus of subgrade reaction.
Also, although the modulus of subgrade reaction generally increased with greater distance from the sea surface to the fill surface, differences in water content at the same height produced maximum differences in modulus of subgrade reaction of up to about 15 MN/㎥ (approximately 15.6%). This indicates that simply increasing the distance from the sea surface is not sufficient to meet compaction criteria, and that the water content of the fill material is a key factor in determining the modulus of subgrade reaction.
The relationship between water content and modulus of subgrade reaction showed a clear trend: higher water content corresponded to lower modulus of subgrade reaction, while lower water content corresponded to higher modulus values. In conclusion, water content was identified as the most influential factor in determining the modulus of subgrade reaction. Proximity to the sea surface led to increased water content and thus reduced modulus of subgrade reaction, whereas greater distance from the sea surface reduced water content and brought the material closer to an optimal water content, increasing the modulus of subgrade reaction. Additionally, non-compacted soils exhibited low modulus of subgrade reaction regardless of water content, but with increasing numbers of compaction passes the variation in modulus due to water content became more pronounced.
This implies that repeated compaction is less effective under high water content conditions and highlights the importance of water content control during fill placement. Therefore, securing the required modulus of subgrade reaction requires not only increasing the number of compaction passes but also maintaining an appropriate water content.
