This study critically examines the structural limitations in which museum collections and archives are separate system structuresand seeks a direction for linkage structures to expand information accessibility and contextual understanding of artworks and records from a user perspective. The core issue identified is not merely the administrative separation of systems, but rather the absence of “context-based linking mechanisms”(e.g., related item links, reference guides, and integrated views of associated records) that interconnect collection data with relevant records and archival materials at the service level. In Korean art museums, despite the existence of archives directly or indirectly related to collections, these resources are often provided through separate platforms or pages. The lack of service design to structurally bridge these two domains hinders cross-referencing, thereby limiting the contextual understanding of artworks and records and restricting the academic utility of both.
For case studies of Korean art museums, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA) and the Seoul Museum of Art (SeMA) were selected. Notably, Nam June Paik’s <The More The Better>(1988) in the MMCA involved the creation of extensive technical documentation, conservation records, and administrative data during its production and operation phases following the opening of the Gwacheon branch in 1986. However, because these archives are not provided through a unified interface linked to the collection data, there are significant difficulties in comprehensively grasping the technical and institutional contexts of the work. These domestic cases confirm that while Korean art museum information structures maintain functional separation, they remain insufficient in providing usercentered contextual linkages.
In the comparative analysis of international cases, this study examines differences in information structures and interconnection methods focusing on MoMA, Getty, Tate, and Japan Search. MoMA strengthens narrative reference structures through exhibition records and its online collection database, while Getty expands research contexts based on standardized metadata and the Provenance Index. Tate maintains separate databases for collections and archives but has attempted to link them within an integrated search interface in selected projects, although the presentation of related information remains limited at the user interface level. Japan Search organizes heterogeneous institutional data into an interoperable structure through a national-level metadata governance model.
Based on these findings, this study proposes that Korean art museum information systems must evolve beyond simple technical integration toward a service-level structural linkage system that semantically connects artworks, records, and production contexts. This advancement requires institutional improvements, including the ensuring metadata interoperability, the design of cross-system reference links, and the systematic incorporation of production process documentation. Ultimately, this study asserts that the context-based connection between collections and archives is a fundamental condition for art museums to function as institutions of ar tistic meaning production and public memory formation.
