"닫힘의 거부": 린 헤지니언의 경계를 가로지르는 시 쓰기

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 현대 미국 여성 시인, 린 헤지니언(Lyn Hejinian 1941-)의 산문시, 『시 쓰기는 기억에 도움이 되는 것(Writing is An Aid to Memory)』(1978)과『내 인생(My Life)』(1987), 『은밀한 방(The Cell)』(1992), 그리고 2012년에 발표한『천개의 눈에 관한 책(The book of a thousand eyes)』이 어떻게 시, 소설, 드라마, 비평, 어린이 동화와 같은 문학 장르의 고정된 경계를 모호하게 만들며, 장르의 경계를 자유로이 가로지르는가를 분석하고, 아울러 헤지니언의 독특한 시 쓰기가 형상화하는 기억(memory)과 텍스트의 상호작용이 어떻게 포스트모던 시대의 ‘열린 텍스트’(open text)로서 시 쓰기의 지평을 새롭게 열고 있는가를 고찰하였다.
헤지니언은 1970년대 중반에 미국 시단에 등장한 언어시인들(Language Poets)--론 실리먼(Ron Silliman), 찰스 번스틴(Charles Bernstein), 수잔 하우(Susan Howe), 브르스 앤드류(Bruce Andrew), 밥 펠러먼(Bob Perelman), 클라크 쿨리지(Clark Coolidge), 로버트 그레니어(Robert Grenier), 스티브 맥캐프리(Steve McCaffery), 등등--가운데 대표적인 여성시인으로, 언어시인들의 시 이론과 전통을 계승·확장하였다. 언어시인들은 미국 시와 시학에 중요한 전환점을 제시하여, 시의 포스트모더니스트라 불린다. 언어시인들의 시는 시, 산문, 비평이론이 뒤섞여 혼종된 형태로 나타나는데, 이는 1960년대 시인들이 보여준 개인 중심적이고 “자기 표현적”인 시의 전형을 비판하고, 단일한 정의나 통일된 사상을 거부하며, 시의 본질을 사회적·심미적인 면에서 재 고찰하려 시도하는 것을 함의한다. 다양한 집단임에도 불구하고 “모든 언어시인들은 활자화된 텍스트의 표면적인 규칙성을 깨뜨리고 인습적인 읽기 과정을 교란하는 작업에 몰두한다”(김양순 52-53). 헤지니언은 의미의 전통적인 유형을 해체하고 언어를 새롭게 만드는데 몰두했던 거투르드 스타인(Gertrude Stein)의 시 창작 기법과 윌리엄 제임스(William James)의 언어에 내재한 심리문제를 탐구하려는 의지를 공유하고 있으며, 버지니아 울프(Virginia Woolf)가 소설에서 그렸던 일상의 순간에서 깨닫게 되는 여성적 경험을 시로 섬세하게 형상화하며, 현재에도 논의가 활발하게 진행 중인 언어의 물질성 그 자체를 탐구했던 윌리엄 칼로스 윌리암즈 (William Carlos Williams)와

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This research aims to explore the work and critical reception of the Language Poet, Lyn Hejinian within "open text" of postmodern American poetry. Hejinian's poems [My LIfe] and [Writing is an Aid to Memory], and [Cell], etc. focus on the postmodern self by resorting on autobgraphy, memory and language. This research argues that Hejinian's poetry addresses the issue of lanauge colonization due to the imposition of syntanx and grammar in an attempt to promote linguistic awakening. According to Maria Kalsta, Hejinian affirms that "poetry takes as its premise that langauge(all language) is a medium for experiencing experience. It provides us with the consciousness of consciousness." In her writing, the idea of language control is replaced by fragmentation, ambiguity, confusion and contradiction. With [My Life], Hejinian sets her own mark within Language poetry in terms of poetic experimentation and manifests her refusal to be categorized according to generic conventions by resorting to various writing styles, such as poetry, autobiography, storytelling and diary writing.
