Max Reger(1873-1916) contributed to the expansion of the German romantic organ repertoire by composing large-scale organ music, including chorale fantasies and free works with fugue. In particular, Reger's First Suite, Op. 16 is the driving force behind his major organ works and the cornerstone of his position as an organ composer. The purpose of this paper is to understand the relationship between Reger and First Suite more holistically by looking at many of Reger's letters related to First Suite which were digitally released in 2023 to mark the 150th anniversary of Reger's birth. These letters help to reconstruct Reger, a young musician who grew up through the environment and anguish he faced at the time, the development process of the work, and the relationship between the people around him, especially Brahms, Strauss, and Straube. And Reger's letters tell us about his life as a professional musician through First Suite.
