웹소설 독자의 젠더 담론 수용 양상 연구 ─로맨스판타지 장르 웹소설의 댓글을 중심으로─ = A Study on the Acceptance of Gender Discourse among Web Novel Readers -Focusing on Reader Comments in Romance Fantasy Web Novels-

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 로맨스판타지 장르 웹소설에 나타난 젠더 재현 양상과 이에 대한 독자의 반응을 분석함으로써 텍스트와 독자의 상호작용 과정에서 형성되는 젠더 담론의 수용 양상을 고찰하는 데 있다. 이를 위해 구독률과 독자의 댓글 참여도가 높은 두 작품을 연구 대상으로 선정하고 연재 회차별 내용과 독자 평점, 댓글 및 대댓글을 분석하였다.
그 결과 여성의 신체와 욕망이 가부장적 젠더 질서 아래 위계화․개별화되고 차등적으로 배치되는 과정 속에서 가부장제가 요구하는 젠더 규범이 유지․강화되는 양상과 능동적이고 적극적인 여성 주체가 등장하여 기존 젠더 질서를 전복하고 새로운 젠더 의미를 형성해 가는 양상을 확인하였다. 이러한 텍스트의 차이는 독자들이 형성하는 댓글 담론에서도 유사하게 드러났다. 포노 사피엔스 독자들은 댓글과 대댓글을 통해 기존 젠더 규범을 감정적으로 수용․비판․저항하는 가운데 새로운 젠더 담론을 형성해 가는 모습을 보였다.
본 연구는 두 편의 로맨스판타지 장르 웹소설을 분석하여 포노 사피엔스 독자가 디지털 플랫폼이 제공하는 텍스트를 단순히 수용하는 수동적 독자가 아니라 댓글과 대댓글을 통해 텍스트의 의미 형성에 참여하고 가부장적 젠더 담론을 재구성해 가는 능동적 주체임을 확인하였다. 나아가 이와 같은 디지털 플랫폼 환경에서 텍스트의 의미가 작가와 독자, 독자와 독자 사이의 담론적 교섭을 통해 확장되고 변주될 수 있다는 점을 밝혔다.

The purpose of this study is to examine the patterns of acceptance of gender discourse formed through interactions between texts and readers by analyzing representations of gender in romance fantasy web novels and readers’ responses to them. To this end, two works with high subscription rates and active reader participation in comments were selected for analysis. The study examined the contents of each serialized episode, reader ratings, reader comments, and replies to those comments.
The findings revealed two contrasting patterns: one in which gender norms demanded by patriarchy are maintained and reinforced through the hierarchical, individualized, and differential arrangement of women’s bodies and desires within a patriarchal gender order, and another in which active and assertive female subjects emerge to challenge existing gender orders and construct new gender meanings. These differences in textual representation were similarly reflected in the discourse formed through reader comments. Through comments and replies, Phono Sapiens readers emotionally accepted, criticized, and resisted existing gender norms while simultaneously forming new gender discourses.
By analyzing two romance fantasy web novels, this study demonstrates that Phono Sapiens readers are not passive consumers who simply accept texts provided by digital platforms, but active agents who participate in the production of textual meaning and reconstruct patriarchal gender discourse through comments and replies. Furthermore, the study suggests that within digital platform environments, textual meaning can be continuously expanded and transformed through discursive negotiations among authors and readers, as well as among readers themselves.
