This study examines Record of the Words and Deeds of Yuhandang Sa-Ssi as a text that constructs a fictional framework while drawing on the themes and narrative methods of jeon (tales) and eonhaengnok (records of words and deeds). In the case of setting the overall framework, fictional characters and backgrounds were created, a plot was constructed, and foreshadowing was utilized in order to reinforce its narrative. Within the framework, themes including didactic and realistic elements were adopted to fill in specific content of each episode. As establishing a fundamental framework and filling in with didactic elements, the Record of the Words and Deeds of Yuhandang Sa-Ssi could be classified as a didactic narrative.
While the Record of the Words and Deeds of Yuhandang Sa-Ssi puts its name with ‘Eonhaengnok’ in front of the work, actually it is a narrative work that transforms didactic elements into the interesting content. The Record of the Words and Deeds of Yuhandang Sa-Ssi utilized a method that set fictional situations and presented narrative scenes in order to convey Confucian ideologies. This dual nature emerged in the process of transition from didactic to narrative literature. As the Record of the Words and Deeds of Yuhandang Sa-Ssi is an early form of Korean traditional novel, it is the piece to demonstrate the process that novels evolved from the genre of Jeon or Eonhaengnok. Thereby, it accounts for narrative tendency of didactic literature.
In the history of Korean literature, it is considered that traditional novel works evolved from the genre of Jeon. It is found that considerable manuscripts of the Record of the Words and Deeds of Yuhandang Sa-Ssi have their different title with Yuhandang Jeon. It means scribes of the Record of the Words and Deeds of Yuhandang Sa-Ssi recognized the Record of the Words and Deeds of Yuhandang Sa-Ssi as a sort of Jeon. Synthesizing the existing literary history research, verifying Korean traditional novels are developed from Jeon and the case of Record of the Words and Deeds of Yuhandang Sa-Ssi, it is found that the genre of narrative forms, which are Korean traditional novels on imaginary characters, evolved from literary forms called Jeon or Eonhaengnok that employed anecdote narratives in order to record words and deeds of real historical figures.
