This study was attempted to look into the concept of holistic education and the theoretical base of holistic curricula in order to properly realize the objective of physical education and recover the essence of the physical education course to contribute to education for the whole man. This study intended to diagnose the current problems of physical education in elementary schools by literature review and suggest a new direction and an alternative of elementary physical education on the basis of the concept and theory of holistic education. For this, literature and logical methods of research were applied, and the following results were obtained:
First, the importance and value of physical education to realize the goal of education for the whole man in elementary education shall be further emphasized, balanced development among cognitive, affective and psychomotor domains shall be sought for, and the physical education course shall be understood from a comprehensive viewpoint.
Second, the content of elementary school physical education shall be reformed in a way to draw out physical movements and individual expressions from humans, and various learning activities to be a basis for life-long physical training shall be offered.
Third, the subject of teaching-learning is leaner, and conversion into a range of teaching-learning methods is necessary in consideration of learner's ability, aptitude and interest in order to truly maximize learning performance.
Fourth, the evaluation of elementary school physical education shall be understood from the standpoints of more practicability, orientation to the course, and meaningful feedback. For this, reliable and diversified means of evaluation shall be developed with efforts of utilization in the school field.
