다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract) kakao i 다국어 번역

Despite much research on conditionals available in literature, a recent trend of the research on the topic is gaining support as an explanatory parameter. The new trend is built on a more cognitive approach such as grammaticalization theory and mental space theory. Drawing upon the findings the validity of which has been widely attested cross-linguistically in the grammaticalization paradigm, this paper attempts to identify the meanings of conditionals by focusing on their boundary with other related categories such as causal, hypothetical, counterfactual, and concessive.
The analysis points to the conclusion that conditionality, causality and concessivity are grammaticalized from the temporality: that conditionality and causality not only share much of their grammaticalization path but also show same degree of grammaticalization; and that concessivity is further grammaticalized from conditionality. We could see that the semantics of these categories can be relatively well delineated, thus constituting separate categories from conditionality, but that they show close interaction and even interference among them since they are closely related categories. On the other hand, hypotheticality is a subcategory of conditionality. In cases of Korean, counterfactuality does not constitute a separate grammatical category due to the lack of stable grammatical properties - the concept is manifested only in gradience along the continuum of hypotheticality.
The explorations from an intra-categorial perspective in this paper, along with the existing body of research that focused on the morpho-syntactic and semantic properties of the category from an intra-categorial perspective, should provide a basis for a better understanding of the conditionals. Further research should pursue such
issues of the conditionals as the prototypical meaning, it's cognitive process in cross-categorial transfer, and the discourse functions.
