This study examines the sound production of the short film Night, focusing on the production of voice-over in film sound. Rather than treating voice-over only as an external narrative device, this study approaches it in a broader sense as a sound element that can organize narrative information, indicate temporal flow, and express the psychological state of a character. Based on this perspective, the study analyzes how voice-over was planned and implemented in the production process of Night.
The research combines theoretical review and practice-based production analysis. It considers the functions of voice-over in relation to narrative progression, character subjectivity, and the boundary between reality and fantasy, and then applies these considerations to the actual sound production process of Night, including pre-production planning, location recording, dialogue editing, ADR, voice-over recording, premixing, and final mixing. The results show that voice-over in Night was not used merely for explanatory narration, but functioned as a central sound element that shaped narrative structure, psychological atmosphere, and the audience’s perception of reality and fantasy. In particular, the production process demonstrated that voice-over could be differentiated in tone, spatial impression, and mixing strategy according to its dramatic role, while still remaining within a unified sonic structure.
This study is meaningful in that it connects discussion of voice-over in film sound with an actual short film production process and presents a practical example of how voice-over can be systematically designed and realized in short film sound production.
