정원도시의 탄생 = The Birth of Garden City

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper analyzes the background of the Garden City idea of Ebenezer Howard and the reasons for its success. First, it looks into the community experience of Robert Owen and the theory of Model Town by James Buckingham, and compares their similarities and differences to Howard’s plan. Howard adopted the idea of moral town, cooperative living, and comprehensive management of the community from previous principles, and developed them further into his own Garden City. Secondly, this paper describes how their experiences in the United States had influenced the shaping of ideas in city planning as they discovered various religious communities and the existence of independent and self-regulated towns in America. Thirdly, Howard’s creative idea of ‘social individualism’ had a great impact on the establishment of the first Garden Cities, as it outlined the need of pursuing the value of individualism and social living simultaneously. Lastly, this paper described the success of Letchworth, the first Garden City near London, as an outcome of combining the ideal of a social community and the realizing a profitable town.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 에벤에젤 하워드의 정원도시 사상의 배경을 살펴보고, 정원도시 건설운동의 성공의 이유를 분석하는 것을 목표로 한다. 첫 번째로 정원도시의 구상에 특히 영향을 미친 로버트 오웬의 공동체 실험과 버킹엄의 모범도시 이론을 살펴보고 정원도시와의 유사성을 검토하였다. 하워드는 도덕적 도시, 생활협동조합, 종합운영 계획이라는 요소를 차용하면서 더 현실주의적인 계획들을 발전시켰음이 드러난다. 두 번째로는 이러한 사상의 진화 과정에서 중요한 역할을 하는 미국적인 요인이 무엇인지 밝혀내었다. 이들은 모두 미국 생활의 경험을 공유하는데, 여기서 다양한 종교 공동체의 존재와 자율적이고 자치적인 지방 도시의 존재가 이들에게 영향을 끼쳤을 것이다. 세 번째로 이전의 미래도시 구상을 뛰어넘어 정원도시가 성공할 수 있었던 데에는 사회주의의 이상과 자본주의의 현실을 결합시킨 ‘사회적 개인주의’라는 독특한 사상이 있었음을 밝혔다. 그리고 마지막으로 이상적인 공동체와 현실적인 이윤창출이라는 두 가지 목표를 조화시켜 성공을 이끌어내었던 영국 정원도시의 구체적 사례를 살펴보았다.
