다문화 교실의 우려와 실재: 학급 내 다문화 학생 비율이 교사의 수업 실천에 미치는 영향 = Perceived Concerns and Empirical Realities in Multicultural Classrooms: Impact of Multicultural Student Ratio on Teaching Practices

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 연구는 학급 내 다문화 학생 비율이 교사의 수업 실천에 미치는 영향을 실증적으로 분석하는 데 목적이 있다. 이를 위해 한국 초등학교 및 중학교 교사를 대표하는 OECD의 TALIS 2024 자료를 활용하였으며, TALIS 2024 자료의 복합표집 설계를 반영할 수 있는 균형반복방법(BRR)을 적용한 다중회귀분석을 실시하였다. 분석 결과, 다문화 학생 비율은 초·중등학교 교사의 수업 실천에 유의미한 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 이는 다문화 학생 증가가 수업의 질적 저하를 초래할 것이라는 막연한 우려와 달리, 교사들이 전문성을 바탕으로 안정적인 수업 수준을 유지하고 있음을 시사한다. 반면 학생의 언어 관련 특성, 저성취 학생 비율, 문제행동 학생 비율은 일부 수업 실천과 보다 밀접한 관련을 보였다. 이러한 결과는 다문화 교육 정책이 이주배경이라는 인구학적 범주에서 벗어나 언어 장벽 해소와 보편적 학습 지원 체계로 전환되어야 함을 시사한다.

This study examined the impact of the multicultural student ratio on teachers' teaching practices using OECD TALIS 2024 data of Korean primary and secondary teachers; A multiple regression analysis was conducted by applying the Balanced Repeated Replication (BRR) method to account for the complex sampling design. The results indicate that the multicultural student ratio had no significant effect on teaching practices. Contrary to concerns that an increase in multicultural students lowers teaching quality, Korean teachers appeared to maintain stable practice levels through their professionalism. Instead, teaching quality was more significantly influenced by students language proficiency and the proportions of low-achieving and misbehaving students. These findings suggest that multicultural education policies should shift from demographic categorization to addressing practical linguistic barriers and establishing universal learning support systems.
