한국어 학습자를 위한 속담 교육연구 : 교사와 학습자의 속담 교육 인식을 중심으로

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 문화교육 가운데 속담교육에 관한 연구로서 교사와 학습자의 속담교육에 대한 인식을 중심으로 효율적인 속담교육 방법을 강구하는데 초점을 두고 있다.속담교육은 한 나라 민족의 오랜 생활습관과 민족성이 담겨 있기 때문에 이를 외국인 학습자에게 적절하게 이해시킬 수 있는 교육이 되어야 한다. 속담은 그 어휘가 교훈적이고, 풍자적이며 의미를 함축하고 있기 때문에 사전적인 설명만으로 이해하기는 쉽지 않다. 그러나 속담은 문장이 간결하면서도 의미가 뚜렷하기 때문에 언어생활에서 실용적이면서도 효과적인 의사전달 역할도 행한다.한국 문화를 가르치기 위한 교육에서 교육의 목표가 무엇인가는 상당히 중요하다. 본 연구에 의하면 무엇을 보여 주려고 하는가 보다는 학습자들이 무엇을 배우려고 하는가에 초점을 맞추는 것이 중요하다는 점도 드러났다. 외국인 학습자가 절실히 원하는 문화교육 내용을 파악하고 그와 적절히 관련된 교육 목표를 세워야만 한국어 문화 교재 내에서도 이상적(理想的)인 문화 항목들을 담을 수 있을 것이다.이런 문제의식에 따라서 본 연구는 각 교육기관의 교재를 분석하고, 속담교육에 대한 교사들의 평가와 학습자의 인식을 바탕으로 국내 교육기관별로 차이가 많은 한국어 교재에서 속담 교육에 관한 일종의 교재개발 필요성을 제기하고 있다.이 글은 제1장에서 외국어로서 한국어에 있어서 속담교육에 관한 선행연구를 살펴보았다.제2장에서는 한 민족의 역사 생활습관 문화와 풍속을 반영된 속담의 개념그리고 비유적이고 교훈적이며 풍자적인 속담의 특징을 살펴보았다.제3장에서는 한국어 교육기관의 교재를 비교하여 속담 수록 수를 분석하였으며, 언어교육으로서 속담교육의 위치와 학습목표 등을 살펴보았다.제4장에서는 한국어 교사를 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하여 속담교육의 효과, 교육방법, 학습자의 요구를 반영한 교재개발의 필요성 등을 분석하였다. 아울러 한국어 학습자를 대상으로 설문조사를 실시하여 속담교육의 효과, 교육방법, 학습자의 요구를 반영한 교재개발의 필요성 등을 분석하였고 학습자들의 조사결과와 비교분석하고 시사점을 제시하였다. 그리고 속담의 빈도와 범위 그리고 설문 대상자의 평가를 기초로 속담교육의 기준을 제시하여 각 수준에 적용할 만한 속담 모형을 선정하였다.제5장에서는 한국어 속담교육과 문화교육을 효율적으로 연관시켜 학습시키는 방안을 마련할 필요성을 결론적으로 제기하였다. 현재까지도 속담교육은 문화교육과는 별개로 이루어지고 있는 실정이며 한국어 학습에서 서로 큰 연관성이 없게 이루어지는 경우도 많다. 문화교육과 속담교육 모두 한국어 교재에 체계적으로 반영되어 있지 않고 교사용 지침에도 마찬가지이다.속담이 한국문화의 특징을 이해하는데 기여하고 나아가 한국어의 이해에 도움을 주는 학습이라고 한다면 속담교육 방법은 문화교육의 문제로 접근할 필요성이 있다. 이런 차원에서 본 논문은 속담교육과 문화교육의 요소를 실제 교육에 체계적으로 반영하기 위해 한국어 학습교재에 나타난 속담의 특징과 문제점을 분석하고 교사 및 학습자의 인식과 평가를 통해서 속담교육의 효과를 높이고 속담교육에서 학습자의 요구와 관심사항 그리고 한국어 학습자를 위한 모형을 시험적으로 제시함으로써 외국인의 원활한 의사소통에 기여하려고 하였다.속담교육을 언어교육의 일환으로 볼 때 본 논문에서는 초급 수준부터 흥미를 유발할 수 있도록 설문대상 교사 및 학습자들의 평가를 반영하여 비교적 이해가 쉬운 속담을 선정하여 교육 초급 단계부터 실시할 필요성을 제기하였고 중급과 고급수준의 속담까지 실험적으로 제시하였다.앞으로 속담선정과 지도법은 좀 더 세밀하게 연구할 필요가 있으나 본 연구에서 심층적으로 다루지는 못하였고 앞으로의 연구과제로 남겨있다.

What cultural aspect should be taught to Korean language learners? It may include not only cultural practices and proper manners to express greetings, appreciations, and apologies, but also the idiomatic expressions reflecting culture such as proverbs, and idioms.The discussion in this study is limited to proverbs. Since proverbs reflects cultural heritage and practices of native speakers, a special consideration is necessary to introduce proverbs to the foreign language learners. Learning proverbs are challenging as guessing the meaning purely from their lexical meaning often frustrates language learners as most of them are condensed. Also, understanding proverbs often requires understanding of the cultural and the historical background. However, learning proverbs provides a great benefit for learners as they a practical and effective means of communicationas they are concise and clear.In developing a textbook for Korean language education, it is important to make clear the purpose of learners who are to learn the language. According to this study it is important to take into account learners’ needs, i.e. cultural content which learners are interested in and wish to learn. However, there is a lack of systematic analysis on proverb education and the teacher recognition about it. By analyzing the textbooks used in Korean language institutes and the data collected from Korean language teachers through questionnaires, this study raises an issue of the necessity of a systematic introduction of proverbs in textbooks.In chapter 1, “An Introduction of the Study,” previous studies on proverb education in Korean language education are summarized. In chapter 2, the concept of the proverb and its characteristics are discussed. Chapter 3 investigates the characteristics of proverbs in the textbooks by analyzing the textbooks used in Korean language institutes. Chapter 4 analyzes data collected from Korean language teachers through questionnaires. It investigates the effect of proverb education, methods of education and the necessity of textbook development reflecting the needs of Korean language learners. Based on the results of the study, it proposes an educational model which can be applied in textbook development for language learners at different levels.Until now, proverb education has been carried out without much relation to culture education. Furthermore, neither culture education nor proverb education is systematically reflected in the textbooks or the teacher’s guidebook. Therefore, it is necessary to make a model for integrating proverbs in Korean language education systematically.Since learning proverbs contributes to better understanding of Korean culture as well as learning Korean language, it is necessary to approach proverb education as a culture education. This study analyzes the characteristics of proverbs in the textbooks for Korean language education and investigates the drawback associated in them. By analyzing the data collected from the Korean language teachers, it investigates their recognition and evaluation of the proverb education. Based on the data analysis, it proposes a model to be used for introducing proverbs in Korean language education. To help learners to communicate better in Korean at an early stage of their learning, it proposes a list of proverbs for beginner learners as well as those at intermediate and advanced.Instructional methods for teaching proverbs are not dealt in this study but left for future studies.
