Changing urban conditions such as the COVID-19 pandemic and population decline have highlighted the importance of neighborhood spaces, and the significance of neighborhood unit as spatial units in urban planning is being highlighted. While discussions have focused on rationally defining neighborhood unit, little is known about the spatial differences in neighborhood unit that may emerge due to the socioeconomic characteristics of urban residents. In particular, while age-related travel patterns can shape neighborhoods differently, research analyzing this is lacking. This study aimed to delineate neighborhood units by age group and compare their differences. We sampled short-distance trips by age group for one weekday in October 2022, using mobile phone data. Community detection was then used to delineate neighborhood units by age group, and these were then compared. The analysis revealed that the neighborhood units for those aged 60 and older was the smallest on average, while for those in their 20s and 30s, areas such as university districts were designated as independent neighborhood unit. In particular, the study revealed spatial differences in neighborhood units by age group, with areas formed as a single area for other age groups becoming fragmented into multiple area for certain age groups. These findings suggest that future neighborhood-based service provision policies should prioritize distributing services for specific age groups across multiple areas, unlike those for other age groups. This study is expected to serve as useful insight for local governments developing facility and service provision policies through neighborhood-based urban planning.
