한영 병렬언어자료에 나타난 한국어 능동문의 영어 수동문으로의 번역 = Functional and Typological Accounts for Translating Korean Actives into English Passives

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The traditional notion of active and passive voice is primarily discourse-pragmatic. The choice of actives over passives or vice versa is most commonly determined by the relative topicality of the agent and nonagent participants of the event (Givón 1993). However, it is often found that Korean actives are translated into English passives (e.g. ilum (name) ssu-n (wrote-Rel) tey (where), lit. where (they) wrote your name vs. where your name was written; apeci-nun (father-Top) kamok-eyse (jail-from) nawa (came), lit. my father had come from jail vs. my father had been released from jail) even in the same discourse context. Our Korean-English parallel corpus shows 150 cases such as these examples. This paper tries to account for these Korean-English translations in terms of grammatical difference between Korean and English in coding less topical agents than nonagent participants, and Ikegami's (1991) typological difference between Korean (BECOME language type) and English (DO language type).
