학생체벌의 교육적 고찰 = An Educational Research concerning corporal Punishment in School Settings

The corporal punishment used in school settings has been regarded as a means of educational guidance to help students to obtain a right view point in the Easten as well as in the Western culture from traditional society to modern society. However, there has been many controversies concerning the educational meaning and the justification of corporal punishments. Not only In school settings, but also this issue creates social conflicts among teachers, students and parents. Though coporal punishment is one of major issues in education, unfortunately, there has not been a clear answer to settle the controversies. This research examines the negative as well as the positive aspects of the role of coporal punishment in school settings and at the same time will review the court cases in America, Japan and Korea concening this issue. The negative as pect of the role of coporal punishment is that it can serve as an obstacle to achieve the educational ideology of autonomy, independence and humanism. Also, students who are accustomed to the atmosphere of corporal punishment tend to be passive, show high anxiety and other Psychological difficulties. On the other hand, the positive aspect of the role of corporal punishment is that at this point in Korea, Schools are in need of this means in order to control the violent and delinquent students who are in the, fame environment with other well- behaving students. The researcher would like to conclude this paper by emphasizing the positive aspect of th role of corporal punishment at present time and further-more woo)d like to suggest tile importance of regulation concerning the acceptable types and boundaries of punishment in school settings.
