This research is about finding the difference between standard weight students and overweight students in their self-respect and sociality. And with the results, this research is purposed to provide basic information materials for treating psychological and emotional problems through thorough understanding of overweight students and effective diet/exercise methods as well as counseling.
The following is a research hypothesis that is to be verified within this research.
Hypothesis 1. Overweight students' self-respect will be lower than that of standard weight students.
Hypothesis 2. Overweight students' self-respect will be lower as the overweight level gets higher.
Hypothesis 3. Sociality of overweight students will be lower than that of standard weight students.
Hypothesis 4. Overweight students' sociality level will be lower as the overweight level gets higher.
Hypothesis 5. There will be difference between genders of standard weight and overweight students in their self-respect.
Hypothesis 6. There will be difference between genders of standard weight and overweight students in their sociality.
Hypothesis 7. There will be difference between genders of overweight students in their self-respect in respect of each overweight level.
Hypothesis 8. There will be difference between genders of overweight students in their sociality capacity in respect of each overweight level.
This research has randomly seleted 12 middle schools in Kangwon-Do's Chun Chun-Si, Wun Ju-Si, and Sokcho-Si areas. Overweight students have been divided into three categories of low, medium, and high in their overweight level according to their 2005 school physical examination results. With standard weight students numbering 240 and overweight students numbering 240, total of 480 students were research subjects.
For measurement tools, Hee Hwa Kim's criterion (1998) for self-respect, which was complemented from the one that was created by Hee Hwa Kim and Kyung Yun Kim together (1996). For sociality, Jae Sik Park's test paper, which was originally made by Bum Mo Chung (1971), standardized by Tae Ryong Han's research (1998), and then complemented by Jae Sik Park himself, was used.
Collected materials were analyzed with SPSS WIN 11.5 program, and for analyzing methods, frequency, percentage, t-test, one-way ANOVA, and two-way ANOVA were used.
The following is the main results of the research.
First of all, self-respect of overweight students was lower than that of standard students, regardless of the gender. Secondly, overall, there was no difference between standard weight students and overweight students in their sociality, but in the low rank area, overweight students seemed to show less activeness than standard weight students. Although the male students did not show much difference, the overweight female students showed less activeness than standard weight female students. Thirdly, there was no observable difference in self-respect and sociality among overweight students in all different overweight levels. Fourthly, in regard to sociality of each gender, the results came out showing that both overweight boys and girls showed lower sociality than standard weight students. Also, overweight girls showed the lowest and standard weight boys showed the highest. Difference of sex and overweight level did had some significant effect, but these factors did not have much of an reciprocal action effect from a statistical view. Fifthly, self-respect of overweight students in each different overweight level (low, medium, high) seemed to be lower in girls than boys.
Especially, self-respect of girls in high overweight level was the lowest and self-respect of boys in low overweight level was the highest. Even though there was difference between genders, difference of sex and overweight level did not have much of an reciprocal action effect from a statistical view. Sixthly, after looking closely of difference of sociality between standard weight and overweight students and difference of sociality between genders of overweight students in the three different overweight levels, it seemed that there was no observable distinction in gender difference, overweight difference, and interaction effect in relation to sociality.
All in all, the result is that by seeing that self-respect level is lower in overweight students than in standard weight students, being overweight plays as a factor of lowering self-respect. Seeing that overweight students are less active, it can be concluded that overweight students do not like to be active and they are lethargic and passive, and such lack of activeness brings more obesity. Also, girls are much more sensitive and discontent about being fat, and they perceive themselves much more fat than they actually are.
Therefore, for clear self-understanding and health management, not only diet and exercise method should be considered, but also psychological and emotional aspect must be considered. In succeeding researches, programs that allows overweight students to foster high self-respect and activeness should be made.
