It has been known that many endocrine diseases arefrequently complicated by cardiovascular diseases and these cardiovascular diseases are accompanied by disturbed lipid metabolism on many occasions. The writer has been in the interrelationship between hormones and lipid metabolism and tried to see and compare effects of several hormones on cholesterol metabolism. Various hormones such as thyroxine, prednisolone, cortisone, estrogen and testosterone were administered to normal rabbits and the changes of total serum cholesterol level were observed for 40 days, After the observation, the animals were killed and the cholesterol conten of the liver tissue was also measured. 1) The total serum cholesterol content in thyroxine group was slightly elevated after 10 days` hormone administration, but since 20th day of observation, the cholesterol level has declined and at 40th day of the course, 34% of initial level of serum cholestetrol has decreased. 2) In two groups to which prednisolone and cortisone were administered respectively, the serum total cholesterol contents have been considerably increased in the course of the hormone administration Namely, the initial 57.3%±8.2㎎% has increased has increased to 2.6%±29.3㎎% in prednisolone-injected group, and the initial 59.8±7.2㎎% increased to 263.1±29.9㎎% in cortisone-injected group. 3) In estrogen group, 27% of the initial serum cholesterol concentration has decreased during the course of experiment. Compared with thyroxine, the estrogen exhibited less intense effect in decreasing serun cholestero level. But the rate of decrease was more even and gradual than that in thyroxine group. 4) By administering testosterone, the serum cholesterol level has increased by 250% of the initial content after 40 days. This phenomenon endorses the fact there are much more incidences of cardiovascular diseases in young men than in young women. The testosterone showed less strong effect in increasing serum cholesterol content than cortisone and roughly equal effect to that of prednisolone. 5) Compared with control group, cholesterol content of liver tissue in thyroxine group showed no change and that in prednisolone and cortisone group increased by 100 to 200% in each. In testosterone group, despite the elevation of cholesterol level in serum, the liver content proved to be lower than control level by 40%. In estrogen group, cholesterol content of liver tissue was also decreased, but less in degree than in testosterone group.
