한ㆍ일 은행산업의 메타효율성 비교 : 이윤과 비용을 중심으로 = Meta-efficiency comparison between Korean and Japanese banking industries : Focusing on profit and cost

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 장기 저성장과 초저금리 환경 등 유사한 금융환경을 가지고 있는 일본과 한국은행산업의 효율성을 진단하여 국내 은행산업의 경쟁력 제고를 목적으로 한다. 연구 방법은 한국과 일본 35개 은행에 대한 5년간(2015년~2019년) 자료를 바탕으로 SFA 모형을 사용하여 한국과 일본 은행그룹의 개별 프런티어를 추정하고 국가별, 피어그룹별 은행산업의 효율성을 진단한다. 그리고 서로 다른 기술로 운영되고 있는 한국과 일본 은행의 개별 프런티어를 포락하는 메타프런티어를 추정하여 두 국가 간 국제적 기술격차를 측정하고 국가별 효율성과 국제간 기술격차를 활용하여 메타효율성을 계산한다. 이러한 절차를 통해 메타프런티어를 선도하는 국가 및 피어 그룹은행을 도출하고 해당은행의 경영 특징을 확인한다. 나아가 두 국가 은행 그룹의 이윤, 비용, 기술격차에 대한 비효율성의 결정요인을 회귀 분석하여 시사점을 도출한다. 실증분석 결과 이윤과 비용의 국가별 효율성은 한국 은행그룹이 더 효율적이다. 그러나 국제 간 기술격차는 이윤 측면에서 일본 은행그룹이 한국에 비해 상당히 앞서 있으며 비용 측면은 큰 차이를 보이지 않았다. 메타이윤효율성은 일본 은행그룹이 한국에 비해 앞서 있는데 이는 국제간 기술격차에 기인하였다. 아울러 메타프런티어를 선도하는 은행 그룹은 일본의 3대 도시은행 그룹으로 도출되었다. 메타비용효율성은 한국 은행그룹이 운영과 기술격차 모두 일본에 비해 앞서 있었다. 이는 한국과 일본 은행그룹의 이윤에 대한 국제간 기술격차는 수입적인 측면임을 시사한다. 은행효율성에 영향을 주는 결정요인은 두 국가 은행 그룹 모두 총수익자산의 시장집중도(HHI지수)를 높이고 순대출비중은 낮추어야 이윤효율성 개선 효과가 발생하는 것으로 분석되었다. 그리고 비용효율성 개선을 위해 대손비용률을 낮추어야 하는 것으로 추정되었다. 따라서 두 국가의 은행산업은 대출금이 늘어날수록 증가하는 신용위험으로 부실채권이 증가하여 은행 효율성에 부정적 영향을 주기 때문에 대출금 이외의 수익자산을 증가시켜 시장 지배력을 높여야 함을 시사한다.
