Moseley and Rieu’s “Useless and Erroneous Activity”

Fred Moseley and Dong-Min Rieu claim that some temporalist refutations (disproofs) of Okishio’s theorem are unrealistic and therefore invalid. We argue that this criticism reflects their failure to understand what a refutation is. In order to refute a theorem, one needs only to provide a single counterexample - no matter how atypical it may be - that satisfies the theorem’s premises but not its conclusion. Moseley and Rieu also suggest that temporalist multi-sector examples arrive at conclusions contrary to Okishio’s because they assume (unrealistically) that some commodity is an very significant input into its own production. To show that this is not the case, we provide a counter-example in which the quantity of each good required to produce one unit of that good is less than 0.0001.
