개인용 정보단말기(PDA)에 사용되는 아이콘의 직관적 의미전달능력에 관한 연구 = (A) Study on the types of PDA Icons and their Communication Capacity

국문 초록 (Abstract)

개인용 정보단말기(PDA)는 기존의 데스크톱 컴퓨터가 고정된 공간에서만 사용되는 단점을 뛰어넘을 수 있는 대안으로 가장 유망하게 떠오르고 있다. 본래의 개인정보관리 기능뿐만 아니라 무선통신기능과 멀티미디어 기능이 부가되어 그 활용도가 점차 증가하고 있는 추세이다.
제한된 화면과 이동 중에 사용한다는 특징으로 인해 개인용 정보단말기에 사용되는 아이콘은 누구나 쉽게 이해할 수 있으며 그 의미와 내용을 논리적으로 이해시키기보다는 직관적으로 인식시킬 수 있도록 디자인되는 것이 중요하다.
본 연구에서는 개인용 정보단말기에 사용되는 아이콘을 기능, 상징화 유형, 운영체제, 컬러사용유무에 따라 분류한 후, 분류된 아이콘 사이에 직관적 의미전달능력에 차이가 있을 것으로 보고 이를 실증적으로 검증해보고자 실험연구를 실시하였다.
실험을 위해 개인용 정보단말기의 주요 기능 8가지에 대한 실행 아이콘을 각 기능별로 6종류씩 선정하였다. 이 아이콘들은 기능에 해당하는 아이콘인지를 묻는 질문을 한 후에 질문에 제시된 기능에 해당하는 아이콘 6종류와 질문에 제시된 기능에 해당하지 않는 아이콘 6종류를 임의의 순서로 뒤섞여 보여주고 응답하도록 하였다. 피실험자들의 응답을 통해 인식확률, 인식민감도, 반응지체시간, 인식시 반응지체시간을 측정하였는데, 인식확률은 전체응답에 대한 정답비율을, 인식민감도는 시그널 디텍션 기법을, 반응지체시간은 응답하는 데까지 걸린 시간을, 인식시 반응지체시간은 정답에 대한 반응지체시간을 이용하여 측정하였으며, 분석은 평균비교와 대응표본 t-검증(Paired-Samples T Test)을 이용하였다.
연구결과, 개인용 정보단말기에 사용되는 아이콘은 기능, 상징화 유형, 운영체제, 컬러사용유무에 따라 직관적 의미전달능력에 차이가 있는 것으로 나타났다. ① 기능에 따라 분류 된 아이콘 중, 데스크톱 컴퓨터 등과 같은 다른 정보기기에서 사용하는 것과 동일한 지시대상을 사용하는 아이콘과, 지시대상에 대한 표현이 정확하면서 단순한 아이콘의 직관적 의미전달능력이 높은 것으로 나타났다. 반면 기능이 복합적이거나 지시대상에 대한 표현 방법이 지나치게 구체적인 아이콘은 직관적 의미전달능력이 낮은 것으로 나타났다. ② 상징화 유형별로 분류된 아이콘 중, 기능과 관련된 동작을 표현하고 있는 아이콘은 인식정확도가 가장 높게 나타났고, 인식지체시간은 다소 길게 나타났다. 지시대상을 직접 표현한 아이콘과 문화적 습관에 의해 정해진 추상적 형태로 표현되어진 아이콘은 인식정확도는 낮았으나 인식지체시간은 더 짧은 것으로 나타났다. ③ 운영체제에 따라 분류된 아이콘 중, 지시대상에 대한 표현이 구체적이고 표현요소가 많은 아이콘은 인식정확도는 높고 인식지체시간은 긴 것으로 나타났고, 지시대상에 대한 표현이 단순하면서도 정확하게 표현된 아이콘은 인식정확도는 낮게 나타났으나 인식지체시간이 짧은 것으로 나타났다. ④ 컬러사용유무에 따라 분류된 아이콘 중, 컬러를 사용하고 있는 아이콘은 색상 수가 제한된 개인용 정보단말기에서도 컬러가 주는 자극이 영향을 미쳐 직관적 의미전달능력이 뛰어난 것으로 나타났다.
본 연구는 개인용 정보단말기 아이콘에 관한 연구가 부족한 상황에서 이루어졌다는 점에서 의의를 찾을 수 있고, 더 나아가 정보기기의 아이콘과 인터페이스에 대한 연구의 디딤돌이 될 것으로 기대한다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Personal Digital Assistant(PDA) is thought to be the best replacement for PCs which are not easily portable in most cases nowadays. The main application of PDA was originally focused on Personal Information Management(PIM), but recently many PDA users started to benefit from its wireless Internet support and various multimedia functions, including MP3, movie playback. Moreover, PDAs can be used just like computers with proper software installed.
PDAs, however, have its own limitations. First, LCD screens attached to PDAs are much smaller compared to PC monitors for better portability. And its icons and graffiti(text recognition system) must be easily understandable and intuitive. If it's too difficult and requires deep logical thinking most people will not be able to learn it.
This research categorizes various icons that used in PDAs according to symbolization patterns, operating systems and support for color display. Since different icons vary in communication capacity I executed this research to verify it positively.
For experiment, 6 executive PDA icons are selected for each of 8 functions. After inquiring functions that these icons have, questions about 6 icons that have preceded functions and 6 icons not related to them are made. Recognition rate, recognition sensitivity, delay before reaction, delay after recognition are measured through subjects' answers. I calculated recognition rate as the ratio of right answers from all answers, recognition sensitivity from signal detection method, delay before reaction from the time before answers are made, and delay after recognition from the time before right answers are made. All data were analyzed with mean comparison and paired-samples T test.
In result, PDA Icons were found to have different intuitive communication capacity according to its functions, symbolization pattern, operating system and use of color.
① Icons which have similar object as ones that are used on desktop computer and icons with accurate, simple expression seems to have higher intuitive communication capacity among the icons categorized by functions. But users had some difficulty in recognizing icons that have multiple functions and too concrete expression. ② Among the icons categorized by symbolization pattern, ones that express the action related to their functions have the highest recognition accuracy and longer delay before recognition. And icons that express object itself and represented with an abstract form by a cultural habit have lower recognition accuracy but boast shorter delay before recognition. ③ Among the icons categorized by operating systems, ones that have concrete expression of object and a number of representation elements have higher recognition accuracy and longer delay before recognition. And icons with simple, accurate expression have lower recognition accuracy but shorter delay before recognition. ④ Among the icons categorized by color and grayscale, ones with color have superior communication capacity due to additional stimulation although LCDs in most PDAs have limited color depth.
The meaning of this research can be found when we consider the situation that there are not much study on icons on PDA. This should be a stepping stone for further research of PDA icons and interface.
