    The purpose of this study is to investigate achievement of science concepts and misconceptions of elementary 5th graders using science tests at 1st semester of 5th grade. By extracting main science conceps and learning objectives, science tests are developed and performed in ``S`` elementary school of ``C`` city, ``D`` elementary school of ``J`` city, ``A`` elementary school of ``J`` city in Gyeongsangnam-do. And then a questionnaire of description type and an interview were performed with four children which was about difficult items that shown misconception. The average degree of achievement of each unit was rather high such as 1st chapter, 80.93%, 2nd chapter, 79.75%, 3rd chapter, 76.40%, 4th chapter, 85.42% which were calculated from the analysis of correct answer in each item. As analyzing the interview and a questionnaire paper of description type, various misconceptions from nine items of 1st chapter to 4th chapter were appeared, which were below 70% of correct answer ratio. The causes of misconception are having wrong concept formation, having stereotype, lack of understanding of invisible phenomenon, confused with learned contents at 4th grade, students` misconceptions learned from teachers who have misconceptions and the contents of textbook limited. The result of this study suggests that teacher is the most important variable for students` achievement and reducing students` misconceptions. Also, for the future continuous analysis of each science concept in various units and chapters in science textbooks and science classes.
