This paper examine how the webtoon “Jungnyeoni” (2019-2022) reenacts Women’s Gukgeuk, a genre that enjoyed its golden age in the 1950s, with particular attention to how characters’ gender performances create fissures within the gender binary and challenge norms of normativity. “Jungnyeoni” centers on the historical practice of Women’s Gukgeuk actors in the 1950s performing roles that transcended biological sex, thereby revealing the fluidity and performativity of gender in both theatrical performance and everyday agency. This paper argues that such representations function as a narrative strategy that exceeds mere historical reenactment, instead interrogating the normative sex order through gender traversal.
The webtoon “Jungnyeoni” constructs a female-centered narrative in which the protagonist joins a Women’s Gukgeuk troupe, experiencing solidarity and emotional intimacy with fellow performers as she matures. Women’s Gukgeuk is a performing arts genre characterized by an all-female cast. It reached its golden age until the mid-1950s, achieving immense popularity, but rapidly declined by the 1960s. While “Jungnyeoni” adopts this historical context as its backdrop, it employs a strategy of re-narration that links past and present by reinterpreting the decline of Women’s Gukgeuk from a contemporary perspective.
Gukgeuk, which had survived only tenuously since its decline, began to receive renewed attention in the 2020s, an upsurge significantly influenced by “Jungnyeoni”. The webtoon gained widespread popularity and was subsequently adapted into ch'anggŭk and television dramas. These adaptations across multiple media prompted Women’s Gukgeuk troupes to stage performances incorporating contemporary themes such as gender politics, gender violence, and gender performativity, thereby attracting public interest. Moreover, “Jungnyeoni” visually reconstructs the repertoire of Women’s Gukgeuk troupes by utilizing the distinctive characteristics of the webtoon medium. Comic-specific techniques—including vertical panel layouts, the use of white space between panels, and irregularly shaped speech bubbles—enhance the sensory impact of the play-within-a-play, creating a close connection between staged performances and the real-world narrative. The play-within-a-play thus operates not merely as a reenactment of theatrical performance but as a structural device that signals emotional transformations and narrative direction.
The emotions generated through the play-within-a-play subsequently feed back into the real-world narrative, with the webtoon positioning intimacy among characters as its primary narrative engine. This intimacy, combined with gender-traversing performances within the genre-specific framework of Women’s Gukgeuk, reveals the possibility of relationships not defined by the gender binary. “Jungnyeoni” presents forms of intimacy detached from heterosexual romantic norms by depicting characters classified as same-sex who perform diverse genders and share emotions both on and off the stage. Through this narrative structure, the webtoon accumulates a sense of queerness by extending gender traversal beyond a temporary performance or narrative device into a fundamental mode of relationship-building and emotional exchange. This study interprets gender disruption, intimacy, and ultimately an escape from heteronormative thinking through the characters of “Jungnyeoni”.
Readers who encountered the play-within-a-play episodes often left online comments as though they had actually attended a theatrical performance. This paper analyzes the directorial strategies of “Jungnyeoni” using Scott McCloud’s comic theory as its analytical framework, with particular attention to the concepts of “comic symbols” and “comic closure.” It explores how the webtoon constructs the sound and movement of the play-within-a-play within readers’ sensory experiences. In addition, it examines how both the play-within-a-play and the overall narrative structure organize themes of female solidarity and emotional connection.
“Jungnyeoni” presents a narrative variation on historical reality by depicting Women’s Gukgeuk as facing a crisis of decline yet ultimately overcoming it and continuing into the 1960s, thereby narratively demonstrating the genre’s sustainability. This conclusion maintains a moderate tone rather than pursuing radical subversion, offering a nuanced portrayal of the historical conditions surrounding Women’s Gukgeuk and the public gaze directed toward it. Reader responses to the play-within-a-play episodes indicate that audiences experience these sequences as closely resembling actual theater attendance. Such reactions to the webtoon’s concise expressive style can be interpreted as evidence of its rejection of normative standards and its potential for feminist interpretation.
Readers occupy a meta-audience position, interpreting not only the play-within-a-play but also events occurring outside the stage. In this role, they actively read and respond to themes of gender traversal, misogyny, and same-sex intimacy. Through an analysis of online comments, this paper demonstrates that the work’s gender politics extend beyond the text itself and expand during the process of reception.
While reenacting Women’s Gukgeuk of the 1950s, the 2020s webtoon “Jungnyeoni” challenges assumptions of femininity and the gender binary through the genre’s characteristic practice of women performing multiple genders. The work develops intimacy between characters classified as same-sex within the framework of the gender binary into a love narrative, thereby presenting the possibility of relationships not subsumed under heteronormativity. This narrative is constructed not through explicit declarations of deviation from normative standards, but through gender performance and the gradual accumulation of emotion. Furthermore, meta-audience commentary surrounding the work extends the significance of this gender disruption beyond the text, demonstrating how critiques of normative standards are activated in the reception process. Consequently, “Jungnyeoni” does not merely reenact a historical performing art but instead presents a cultural possibility for critically reflecting on contemporary gender norms and sensibilities.
