This paper`s purpose is to survey how KPT(Korean Proficiency test) evaluates Korean learners` grammatical competence through analysis of the 6th, 7th, and 8th tests, and to suggest further directions for development of KPT. To put it concretely, I surveyed the frequency and distribution of grammar patterns, and analyze both the types of questions and the type of examination text itself in 6th, 7th, 8th tests. Through this result I reached suggestions that may improve the KPT. Compared to previous tests, the current 6th, 7th, 8th tests are more systematic because questions are following the question making criterion(Kim Wang-Kyu, 2002). However, these tests still have some issues. For example, a few grammar questions are not following their criterion, and unimportant grammar questions are too frequently being asked. As for the types of questions, there appears to be too large a variety of questions, and imbalanced in the percent of question types. Finally, at the higher levels, there appears to be no spoken text. In addition, to gauge the Korean learners` level of communicative competence, there needs to be a list of basic grammar patterns and a list of grammar patterns used in the professional world. Especially, how important, the frequency of use, and common errors that Korean learners make should be a factor in deciding the basic grammar patters list.
