The purpose of the study was to investigate the relationships among achievement goals (mastery goal and performance goal), the use of learning strategies, and attributions for success and failure. The subjects chosen for this study were 449 elementary school students from three schools. Two hundred and twenty of the elementary school students were males and 229 of them were females. The results of the present study were as follows: 1. Mastery goal was related to the use of learning strategies and the effort attributions for success and failure. 2. Performance goal was related to the use of learning strategies and the effort attributions for success and failure. In conclusion, the unexpected results of the study were explained in terms of the problem of the instrument and possible cultural differences. And the importance of performance goal was emphasized as well as that of mastery goal in a classroom setting. Finally, the suggestions were provided for the future study.
