도널드 리드 워맥 작곡 산조가야금 트리오와 장구를 위한 <원형운동력> 분석연구 = A Study on 〈Circular Momentum〉 for Sanjo Gayageum trio and Janggu Composed by Donald Reid Womack

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 논문은 국내외에서 활발한 활동을 하는 서양 작곡가인 도널드 리드 워맥(Donald Reid Womack)의 “산조가야금 트리오와 장구를 위한 〈원형운동력〉”을 분석연구한 논문이다. 이 연구를 통해 작곡가가 가진 산조가야금 중주곡 작품의 음악적 특징을 세세히 들여다볼 수 있을 것이다.
제Ⅱ장에서는 도널드 워맥의 음악세계와 그의 작품 중 한국전통악기가 포함된 작품과 산조가야금이 포함된 작품을 개관하였다. 그동안 도널드 워맥은 한국에서 다수의 작품을 발표하였는데, 전통장단과 연주법에 대한 새로운 시도를 통해 자신만의 해석으로 음악활동을 펼치는 독창적인 작곡가로 평가받았다. 그의 작품 중 〈무巫:Mu〉, 〈Intertwined〉, 〈한줌 봄바람에 쌓인 눈이 녹듯...〉은 산조가야금이 포함된 작품으로, 가야금의 악기적 특성을 활용한 다양한 연주법을 통해 음향적 확대를 주며 더 풍성한 입체감을 표현하였다.
제Ⅲ장에서는 〈원형운동력〉의 악곡 구조를 검토하고 단락별로 가야금과 장구의 선율, 리듬을 분석하였다. 그리고 두 악기의 관계를 비교분석하였다. 〈원형운동력〉은 총16단락 구성이며, 음악의 흐름에 따라 Intro-A-I , J-K , L-O 까지 총3단락으로 나누어 진행하였다. Intro-A-I는 곡의 도입부로 이 곡의 핵심인 5가지의 모티브가 등장하였고, 모티브의 변형 및 발전을 통해 선율이 진행되었다. J-K는 곡의 중반부로 카덴차와 같은 형식으로 제시하였다. L-O는 곡의 종결부로 모티브를 활용한 크고 작은 원형 형태의 유기적 선율이 반복적으로 나타나며 곡이 마무리된다.
제Ⅳ장에서는 〈원형운동력〉의 음악적 특징과 연주법 특징을 분류하였다. 그 결과는 다음과 같다.
첫째, 이 곡은 총 5가지의 모티브를 이용하여 그 형태를 계속 변형 및 발전시켜 순환하는 형태를 갖게 된다. 이는 음악이 원을 그리며 돌아가는 순환을 의미하며, 결국 곡의 제목과 같은 ‘원형운동력’을 표현한다.
둘째, 산조가야금 중주곡으로써 각 파트가 서로 유기적 관계를 가지고 음악이 진행되며 반복되는 유기적인 구조, 선율, 리듬의 진행을 보인다. 이는 곡 안에서 다양하게 나타난다.
셋째, 〈원형운동력〉은 산조가야금의 다양한 연주법과 음악적 표현으로 ‘원형운동’을 표현하였다. 기존 산조가야금의 전통적인 주법에 현대음악에서 나타나는 주법을 더하여 폭넓은 음향을 시도하였고, 크고 작은 악상을 통해 ‘원형운동력’을 표현하였다.
이상 작품을 분석한 결과, 작곡가 도널드 워맥은 〈원형운동력〉을 산조가야금의 연주법을 활용한 모티브를 제시하고 발전시키어 전통어법과 현대어법이 융화된 자신만의 독창적인 중주곡으로 탄생시키었다. 또한 이 작품은 ‘어버이와의 동행’이라는 부모자식간의 유대 관계를 크고 작은 원형운동의 유기적 관계로 표현한다. 이는 곡의 주제인 ‘원형운동력’을 현대적으로 표현하고 해석하는 역할을 하였다.
본고를 통해 도널드 워맥의 작품해석에 대해 도움을 주고, 연주법의 이해 및 가야금 현대음악의 연주법 개발에 도움이 되었으면 한다. 더 나아가 가야금연주자뿐만 아니라 작곡가들에게도 실질적인 도움이 되기를 바란다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This thesis analyzes and studies 〈Circular Momentum〉 for Sanjo Gayageum trio and Janggu of Donald Reid Womack, a Western composer who is active in Korea. Through this study, it will be possible to look into the musical features of the composer's Sanjo Gayageum quartet work in detail.
In Chapter II, Donald Womack's music world, among his works, works including Korean traditional musical instruments and works including Sanjo Gayageum were overviewed. In the meantime, Donald Womack published a lot of works in Korea, and he was evaluated as an original composer who performs music activities with his own interpretation through new attempts at traditional rhythms and playing techniques. Among his works, 〈巫:Mu〉, 〈Intertwined〉, and 〈A Spring breeze melts the snow...〉 are works that include Sanjo Gayageum. He applied diverse playing techniques by utilizing the musical characteristics of Gayageum. And he expressed a richer three-dimensional effect as music through acoustic expansion.
In Chapter III, it reviewed the music structure of 〈Circular Momentum〉 and analyzed the melodies and rhythms of Gayageum and Janggu by each paragraph. After that, it compared and analyzed the relationship between the two musical instruments. 〈Circular Momentum〉 was composed of a total of 16 paragraphs, and was divided into 3 paragraphs, Intro-A-I, J-K, and L-O, according to the music flow. Intro-A-I was the introduction part of the song, and the 5 motifs that are the core of the song appeared, and the melody appeared through transformation and development. J-K was presented in the same format as cadenza in the middle part of the song, and L-O was the ending part of the song, and large and small circular organic relationships that utilized motifs appear repeatedly and the song ended.
In Chapter IV, it classified the musical features and playing technique features of 〈Circular Momentum〉.
First, this song uses a total of 5 motifs. Its form continues to be deformed and developed, resulting in a circulating form. This expresses a cycle where the music goes around in a circle. In the end, this expresses 'Circular Momentum' like the song title.
Second, this is Sanjo Gayageum quartet. The music proceeds in an organic relationship with each part. It shows repeated organic structure, melody, and rhythmic progression. This appears in diverse ways in the paragraphs in the song.
Third, 〈Circular Momentum〉 is diverse playing techniques and musical expressions of Sanjo Gayageum. And it expressed 'Circular movement'. The traditional playing technique of the existing Sanjo Gayageum was added to the modern music playing technique. So, it tried a new wide range of sound. The theme of ‘Circular Momentum' was expressed with large and small musical motif.
As a result of analyzing the work as above, composer Donald Womack actively utilized the same motif as the playing technique of Sanjo Gayageum. And it could be seen that this was a work created as a creative quartet that combined traditional and modern methods within the unique features of each musical instrument. And this work expressed the bond between parents and children, ‘companion with parents', as an organic relationship of large and small circular movements. As a result, it was a work that expressed the theme of the song, “Circular Momentum”, in a modern way.
Through this paper, I want to help interpret Donald Womack's work, understand how to play it, and develop how to play Gayageum modern music. Furthermore, I hope it will be of practical help not only to Gayageum players but also to composers.
