Octavia E. Butler’s Nomadic Ethics: Race, Humanity, and Gender in Kindred, Xenogenesis, and Parables = 옥타비아 E. 버틀러의 유목적 윤리: 『킨드레드』, 『제노제네시스』, 『우화』에 나타난 인종, 인간, 젠더

This dissertation focuses on Octavia E. Butler’s Kindred, the Xenogenesis trilogy, and the Parables duology, tracing the development of Butler’s narrative experiment—namely, an ethical project that begins with historically grounded critiques of racialized power, moves through posthuman reconfigurations of identity, and ultimately addresses pragmatic questions of community and survival in a collapsing world. Kindred situates Butler’s critique within the embodied trauma of slavery, revealing racial identity as historically contingent and ethically compromised. Xenogenesis extends this critique to the level of species, challenging anthropocentric assumptions through alien-mediated hybridity and relational becoming. Parables returns to a near-future Earth to ask whether adaptive, nomadic ethics can take root without extraordinary intervention amid religious authoritarianism and economic collapse.
Accordingly, this dissertation argues that Butler’s major novels constitute a sustained speculative project designed to dismantle unitary conceptions of subjectivity and to imagine alternative forms of being grounded in relationality, contingency, and ethical negotiation. Across historical, far-future, and near-future settings, Butler stages encounters with difference that expose how race, gender, and species are mobilized within systems of labor, reproduction, and survival to reproduce exclusionary hierarchies. Rather than offering visions of liberation or teleological progress, her fiction emphasizes process, uncertainty, and transformation, insisting that sustainable subjectivity emerges only through an affirmative embrace of difference.
In the contemporary moment—marked by ecological crisis, the resurgence of authoritarianism, and ideological retrenchment—Butler anticipates the recursive violence of history and calls on readers to imagine modes of being that are accountable to change. This dissertation therefore contends that the acceptance of the Other constitutes the philosophical core of Butler’s narrative experiment, advocating the abandonment of static identities and hierarchical logics in favor of a relational, nomadic ethic of survival.

본 연구는 옥타비아 E. 버틀러의 『킨드레드』(Kindred), 『제노제네시스』(Xenogenesis) 3부작, 『우화』(Parables) 2부작을 중심으로, 버틀러의 서사 실험—즉 역사적으로 구체화된 인종화된 권력의 비판에서 출발해, 정체성의 포스트휴먼적 재구성, 그리고 붕괴하는 세계 속에서 공동체와 생존의 실천적 문제로 나아가는 버틀러의 윤리적 기획—의 전개를 추적한다. 『킨드레드』는 노예제에 체화된 트라우마 속에 버틀러의 비판을 위치시키며, 인종적 정체성이 역사적으로 구성되고 윤리적으로 훼손된 것임을 밝힌다. 또한 『제노제네시스』는 이 비판을 종의 차원으로 확장하여, 외계 존재에 의해 매개된 혼종성과 관계적 생성(becoming)을 통해 인간중심주의적 가정을 문제 삼는다. 그리고 『우화』는 다시 근미래의 지구로 돌아와, 종교적 권위주의와 경제적 붕괴 속에서 초월적 개입 없이 적응적, 유목적 윤리(nomadic ethics)가 정착될 수 있는지 묻는다.
