The purpose of this study was to observe the effect for the in-service teacher training and the development for early childhood English teachers program through a survey of the current situations around the country. The results of this study are as follows :
Firstly, the training time and the number of the trained teachers must be increased for effective influence on this field in society.
Secondly, the most important aspect of early chilhood English education is a well-trained English teacher, and the questionnaire responses confirm that the teacher's English language skill is the most essential factor.
Third, for an English teacher training subject, the early childhood English teachers preferred English conversation and teaching skills. They wanted to have a short-term overseas training, an intensive training course after regular training, and a National Foreign Language Island Training Program.
These facts suggest that :
1. The early childhood English teacher training program must be extended from 60 hours to 120 hours and every teacher training institute needs to have a standardized teacher training program for early childhood English teachers.
2. The program needs to invite an effective instructor like a native speaker, and also have a well-experienced Korean English teacher in language teaching classes.
3. The program needs to provide an opportunity for interaction and spontaneous activities of the participants during the course, more than just listening to a lecture.
4. Early childhood English teachers should pay attention to the goal of early childhood English education by focusing on listening and speaking.
Finally, the results of this study will be good basic data for the development of effective early childhood English teacher training programs in Korean early childhood English education. In addition, it is expected that each local teacher training institute consider these recommendations seriously in establishing curriculum for early childhood Englsih teacher training programs.
