This thesis is a study on the ethical tradition of Buddhist food culture. Frankly speaking, a characteristic of Buddhist food culture is vegetarianism. Today vegetarianism is well known as well-being style. But Buddhist tradition of food culture is different from that of well-being. This is focused on the individual health state, but the latter says a means to keep body alive and arrive at the way of training mind. So a famous Buddhist text say that “I take a food only in order to keep my body alive and to establish the Tao of Bodhsattva. As we have seen, Buddhist food culture is relevant to religious belief of Buddhist monk and the vegetarianism as a characteristic of temple food is relevant to prohibitive injunction ``not to kill`` which is meant the self-controlling method in a sense that we want to control myself and arrive at the state of nirvana. So we are going to take an examination of the meaning of temple food(2 ch.) and the characteristic of Buddhist eating manner(3 ch.) and the significations of prohibitive injunction ``not to kill`` and animal ethics which is relevant to Buddhist prohibitive injunction ``not to kill``.
