타인의 시선: 미국 교실 안의 아시아, 우리의 시선은? = Others` View on Us: Asia in American Classrooms, How about Our View on Others?

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Using global education as a major theoretical framework, this study investigates how Asia is taught in two American secondary classrooms. Major finding shows that there is a significant gap between teachers` personal goals and their actual teaching. That is, whereas the teachers intended to develop multicultural awareness and help their students understand the inner dynamics and diversities among Asian countries, these goals were almost invisible in their teaching. In contrast, biased and simplified images of Asians in popular culture tended to be reproduced in the selected classrooms. Investigating what caused this contradictory result, this study found that the lack of teacher knowledge about Asia and the impact from popular culture created a gap between teachers` goals and the enacted curriculum. This study, however, argues that this kind of curriculum of othering is not just an American teachers` problem in teaching about Asia. Rather, it argues that the dominant perspective on other Asians in Korea, especially those from South Asian countries, is also affected by the Westerners` perspective on the non-Western world. In conclusion, this study contends that the renovation of teacher education to enhance Korean teachers` knowledge and understanding of other Asians and critical media literacy are required for muticultural education in Korea.
