The age of globalization, changes in lifestyle and the development of IT technology have affected human communication and also is changing the shape of interaction between people media. If the media standard has been communication that simply involves one way correspondence of communication, it now is changing to media that does not just convey information but also draws a response from the user and creates a two way flow of communication. In particular, one can say that what draws the most attention is emotional two way communication. By users experiencing media through the five senses of touch, taste, sight, smell and hear, media transcends the conveyance of information in the first dimension and creates new memories and information in the user's subconscious. In this sort of process, the five senses are linked to each other. Rather than relying on just one sensory faculty, media using all five senses can create media that is more memorable.
In this type of societal flow, I try to examine print media that has come into existence since the age of Johannes Guthenberg. Print media has mainly been one way communication that has focused on delivering information to the recipient. Advances in science technology has brought about numerous types of new media that threaten the existence of print media. "A Paperless Society", a topic first brought up by Lthiel de Sola Pool in the 1980's, is a passage that predicted the current threat to print media.
Is it possible for printed media become the type of two way interactive communication that society demands? This thesis will attempt to answer this question. With the assumption that printed media is a form of interactive media, I have decided upon the five senses as elements for expressing the special characteristics of interactive media and analyze different examples of media using each sense.
This thesis progresses as follows. First, I attempt to understand interactive media by determining its identity and course of development. Second, I examine the notion of the five senses and consider how information is theoretically perceived by people. Third, I examine the relationship between interactive media and the five senses. Fourth, I look at instances of printed media in accordance to the classification of the special characteristics of interactive media. In keeping in line with this, the results of the case analysis find that print media that uses the five senses understands its usage. Therefore there is a great deal of potential for two way communication that leads the experience naturally. I also find that visuals are often applied. In addition, looking at the application of the five senses with respect to nonlinearness and playfulness both have the special characteristic of having the use of sight and touch in common. In the future, for print media to become interactive media it can utilize online media's use of interactive and emotional communication.
