The purpose of this study was to analyze the difference between the new movement development program and the existing school dancing program, and to explore the relationship that a program influences children's dance creativity.
The subjects of this study were 72 elementary school students: 36 for the comparable groups(existing program), 36 for the experimental groups(movement development program) respectively. The experimental group was subjected to the movement development program 2 times a week for the 6-weeks.
The movement development program was composed of Laban's basic movement elements, relevant data, and result of previous research. The quantity of the program is equivalent to the 12th of 40 minute lesson units.
The movement development program was based on the following sequence: stage I - Body Awareness, stage II- Movement Awareness, and stage III - Improvision and Imagination. 5 elementary dance specialists and 15 elementary school teachers reviewed the program.
The instrument to measure children's dance creativity was modified Kim's(1989) criteria of evaluation for creative ability in dance.
Data collected from pre and post-tests were subjected to t-test and ANCOVA to test significant differences both within groups and between groups.
Some results from data were as follows:
First, the experimental group which had gone through the movement development program resulted in higher composition scores than the comparable group.
Second, the experimental group which had gone through the movement development program resulted in higher variety scores than the comparable group.
Third, there is no significant difference in expression between two groups.
Forth, the experimental group which had gone through the movement development program resulted in higher inventiveness scores than the comparable group.
In conclusion, this study showed that the experimental group which had gone through movement the development program showed higher scores than the comparable group which had gone through the existing program on improving the dance creativity of elementary school students. Therefore, dancing programs have to develop to encourage teachers to prepare each plan based on knowledge of the developmental level of the student.
