This study aims to investigate the place names of seven villages in Gwanghyewon-myeon, namely Gwanghyewon-ri, Guam-ri, Geumgok-ri, Silwon-ri, Wolseong-ri, Jukhyeon-ri, and Hoejuk-ri, by presenting their etymology, legends, reasons, and related poetry.
Gwanghyewon-myeon, located at the center of Korea, serves as a crucial transportation hub, with an increasing number of public institutions, companies, and agro-industrial complexes. Alongside these developments, traditional place names such as mountains (Deokseong Mountain), streams (Chiljangcheon Stream), fields (Hwarangtul), villages (Bideulmok), passes (Wangjae Pass), rocks (Turtle Rock), and springs (Gwancheong Spring) are disappearing.
Natural village names encapsulate the geographical, linguistic, historical, and cultural characteristics of the region. Therefore, the study of these natural village names is essential in the current era of changes in social structures such as population, culture, housing, and education.
It is crucial to preserve both the past and present of Gwanghyewon-myeon and to leave its natural heritage permanently for future generations. Additionally, based on these natural place names, it is essential to initiate the development of Jincheon-gun's content, thereby providing an opportunity to continue the boundless historical and cultural traditions.
