The purpose of this study is to homiletically implement Nancy Lammers Gross’s ‘hermeneutical swing’ theory. Gross is a New Testament scholar and representative Ricoeurian scholar who carefully observes the process by which preachers read the biblical text. Above all, she is interested in the process of interpretation in which the preacher's understanding of the text goes beyond the cognitive level to the level of ontological 'appropriation' (Aneigung; appropriation), and what and how occurs in that process. In this respect, her perspective is distinctive in two ways. First, while philosophical hermeneutics, which is in line with the 'hermeneutical circle' of Hans-Georg Gadamer and Paul Ricoeur, are methodologies independent of preaching, Gross is to present the hermeneutical cycle as a methodology that is not separate from preaching. Second, in this respect, her hermeneutical swing shows that sermons can be embodied in a homiletical methodology that helps the sermon become an exercise of appropriation of the biblical gospel. The author's interest in this study is to connect Gross's hermeneutical swing to sermons to practically confirm how the hermeneutical cycle between the biblical text and the preacher, or between the biblical text and the congregation, constitutes and leads the sermon. In other words, this study aims to reveal that hermeneutics and homiletics are interconnected in methodology by confirming how it is implemented in the sermon when the sermon takes Gross's hermeneutical swing as a methodology for sermon composition. To this end, the author will first establish the relationship between philosophical hermeneutics and homiletics. Next, we will look at the hermeneutical circle based on Gadamer and Ricoeur and its developed concept, the hermeneutical arch, and introduce Gross's hermeneutical swing, which is another variation of it and has the characteristics of a more practical methodology. Lastly, as the central task of this study, we attempt to implement Gross's hermeneutical swing homiletically. To this end, this paper attempts a hermeneutical swing based on Genesis 8:21-22, 9:8-17 and introduces the structure of the sermon accordingly. Through this, this study seeks to propose a homiletic methodology that helps the preacher and the congregation appropriate the gospel revealed through circular dialogue between the biblical text and the preacher.
