The unit system in secondary education was developed and proliferated in the United States of America in early 20th century. It is one of the characteristics of American education which placed much value on quantitative evaluation. The secondary education of the United States of America in 20th century depended much on this system. Based on this system, the evaluation and recording of students` academic achievement have been managed. The unit system has been a part of the grammar of schooling in nearly all high schools. It is the main purpose of this research to understand the historical background which brought about the unit system in the U. S. A., to investigate the similarities and differences in the process of adopting and making use of the system by Korea and Japan after World War II. The differences in the status of unit system in current educational institutions of Korea, Japan, and the United States of America also were analyzed carefully. Five main differences in the unit system of U. S. A., Japan, and Korea were disclosed in this comparative study. Those are differences in adopting process of the system, in the main groups to cope with the issue, the main purposes assigned on it, impacts on actual education of respective society, and finally the current status of the unit system. It is suggested as a conclusion that the scaling up of the diversity in high school education through the expansion of students` right to select subjects, one of the main ideologies behind the unit system, is advisable in Korea.
