기획논문: 경상우도 성재(性齋) 허전(許傳)의 학단(學團)을 중심으로 : 심재(心齋) 조성렴(趙性濂)의 삶과 시세계 = The Life and Poetic World of Shimjae Jo Seong-ryeom

국문 초록 (Abstract)

조성렴은 인조반정 이후 학문적 침체가 지속되던 江右 지역의 함안에서 性齋 許傳의 학문을 진작시킨 핵심 인물이다. 그는 19세기 중반 이후 강우지역에서 일었던 學脈과 黨色을 초월하는 융합 분위기에도 아랑 곳 않고, 허전에게 집지한 후 일관되게 性齋學에 매진하였다. 또한 조성렴은 함안지역 명문사족의 후예로서 在地的 기반을 바탕으로 심성 수양의 실천적 공부를 완성하고, 이를 통해 실추된 世道 確立을 삶의 지향으로 삼았다. 이를 위해서는 무엇보다 士가 사대부 지식인으로서의 책임과 自意識을 견지하고 실천할 것을 강조하였다. 특히 ``농사``를 강조함으로써 노동의 어려움을 절감하고 놀고먹으면서도 전연 부끄러워하지 않는 士에게 예의와 염치를 바로 세우게 하며, 궁극엔 이를 통해 世道를 技持하려 하였던 것이다. 이는 조성렴이 향촌에 물러나 있으면서도 士로서 자각한 현실인식이자 삶의 지향이었고, 지방사족이 출사하지 않고도 향촌의 宗匠으로서 學究的 鄕風을 진작시키고, 향촌에서 위상을 확립하는 방법이었다. 養心工夫를 통해 士로서의 주체성을 확립하고, 교육활동을 통해 鄕學風 진작에 힘쓴 조성렴의 열정은 19세기 지방사족의 역할과 존립 근거를 확인하는 좋은 본보기가 되고 있다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

Jo Seong-ryeom was the core of a school that promoted the study of Seongjae Heo Jeon in Haman of Gangwoo(Gyeongsang province right of Nakdong River) where academic stagnation continued on since the enthronement of King Injo. He consistently devoted himself to the Seongjae Study after studying under Heo Jeon, giving no attention to the atmosphere of academic integration beyond school and partisan colors in Gangwoo since the middle 19th century, Jo`s life was oriented toward completing the study of practical disposition cultivation based on his local base as a member of Haman`s powerful clan and restoring its lost influence. Thus he stressed that scholars should maintain and practice responsibility and self-consciousness as illustrious officials and intellectuals. By putting special emphasis on "agriculture," he showed the difficulty of labor, urged the scholars who were never ashamed of their doing nothing to earn living to have some manners and a sense of shame, and ultimately tried to maintain the influence all through those measures. That was the reality perception and life orientation of Jo as a scholar even retreated in the country. That was how a local noble family member promoted the local academic style and established his status in the country as the master of the country without going into government service. The passion of Jo Seong-ryeom, who established his independence as a scholar through the study of disposition cultivation and made efforts for the promotion of local academic style through educational activities, makes a good example to understand the roles and existential grounds of local noble families in the 19th century.
