자연이 하나가 아닐 때:한의학 실험연구와 약성연구의 존재들과 실천들 = When Nature is not Singular: Things and Practices of Experimental Research and Herb-Nature Research in Korean Medicine

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper examines the issue of nature on the backdrop of recent discussions of the “turn.” For this goal, the present study focuses on the knowledge(knowing) and practice of Korean medicine. While Korean medicine is an East Asian medicine based on the East Asian understanding of nature, it also shows interesting hybridity having faced the modern concept of nature and science. To examine plural natures in the research activities of Korean medicine, this study juxtaposes experimental study and traditional herb-nature study, referring to Barad’s agential realism and East Asian ontology. Representationalism of experimental research emphasizes how an extracted compound from a medicinal herb can be reflected and represented. Non-representationalism of herb-nature study attends to the entanglement of human and herb through tasting by which the relationship of a doctor and a herb is established, which is in turn extended to the patient and herb relationship. Despite the difficulties of imagining beyond the division amid the forceful presence of modern divide of nature and human, discussions of nature in humanities and social sciences are highly demanded in this era of the climate crisis. This paper exemplifies a direction of intervention by providing a case of examining nature on its metaphysical basis and social practices on the basis.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이 논문은 최근 “전회(turn)” 논의들의 배경 속에서, 자연에 대한 인문사회과학적 논의에 참여하기 위한 시도이다. 이를 위해 본 논문이 주목하는 것은 한의학의 지식(앎)과 실천이다. 동아시아의학으로서 그 자체가 동아시아 자연에 대한 이해를 바탕으로 한 지식(앎)과 실천의 체계이면서, 또한 지금의 한의학은 과학과 근대적 자연을 대면하면서 흥미로운 혼종성을 드러내 보인다. 이 논문은 한의학 현장의 복수의 자연에 대한 논의를 위해, 한의학 본초에 관한 실험연구와 약성연구를 병치시키면서, 버라드(Barad)의 행위적 실재론과 동아시아 존재론을 연결하여 논의를 전개한다. 재현주의의 실험연구에서는 성분의 효과를 어떻게 반영하고 재현할 것인가의 문제가 중심에 놓여 있다. 비재현주의의 약성연구에서는 인간과 비인간, 즉, 한의사와 본초 사이 맛봄을 통한 얽힘의 상황이 중요하다. 얽힘을 통해 한의사와 본초 관계가 설정되며, 그 관계는 이어지는 환자와 본초 관계를 구성하는 근거가 된다. 깊게 뿌리박은 자연 대 인간의 근대적 분리체계 속에서 자연에 대한 논의는 난제라고 할 수 있지만, 당면한 인류세에서 인문사회과학의 자연에 대한 논의는 강력하게 요구되고 있다. 이 논문은 형이상학적 맥락 위에서 자연을 논하고 그와 연결된 실천을 논하는 것이 인문사회과학의 자연 논의의 한 방식이 될 수 있음을 보이고자 한다.
