영상매체에 구현되는 한글 가독성에 관한 연구 : 초등학생을 중심으로 = A Study on the Readability of Hangul Implemented in Video Media : With a focus on elementary school students

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구는 영상매체에 사용되는 글꼴이 초등학생들의 가독성에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 알아보고, 초등학생에게 이상적인 글꼴을 제시하고자 하는데 그 목적이 있다.
인터넷상에서 그 이용자 수가 급증하고 있으며 향후에도 잠재적 영향력을 갖고 있는 초등학생들을 대상으로 가장 효과적인 글꼴을 찾아, 교육현장에 효율적으로 적용시켜야 할 필요가 있다.
본 연구에서는 선행연구에서 논의되었던 서체와 인터넷 환경(Internet)의 기본글꼴 그리고 요즘 각광받고 있는 새로운 글꼴을 기준으로 바탕체, 굴림체돋움체 맑은 고딕, 함초롬돋움 함초롬바탕체를 서체별 글자크기 중심으로 가독성환경을 조사하였다.
한글, 숫자의 13point 글씨체(font)에서는 화면과 지면모두 함초롬돋움체가 가독성이 가장 높았으며, 12포인터에서는 모니터는 모두 함초롬돋움의 가독성이 가장 높다고 답했으며, 지면에서 5학년의 경우 맑은 고딕이, 3학년은 함초롬돋움의 가독성이 높다고 답했다.
초등학교 저학년에서의 함초롬돋움의 높은 가독성은 저학년일수록 더 진하고 반둣한 글꼴을 선호하기 때문이며, 고학년의 경우 기존 글자체에 더 많은 노출이 있어, 비슷한 글자체를 봤을 때 익숙한 글자체를 고르는 경향이 강해 함초롬돋움과 비교했을 때 굴림체와 비슷한 환경의 맑은 고딕을 선택했다.
맑은 고딕은 함초롬돋움보다 장평이 조금 더 넓으며, 함초롬돋움은 글자가 더 진하고 선명하며, 장평도 맑은 고딕보다 1:0.7인 종이면 비율에 더 가깝다.
초등학생들에게 가장 적절한 글자체는, 글자가 선명하고 반듯해야하며, 글자의 굵기 또한 적절한 것이 글자의 형태를 돋보이게 하고 가독성을 높인다는 것을 알 수 있다.
성인들에 대한 가독성의 연구뿐만 아니라 이제 초등학생들과 같은 변별 계층에 대한 가독성의 연구도 더 활발히 진행되어 영상매체에서의 표준적인 글자체를 갖추어 나가야 한다고 본다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The purposes of this study were to investigate the effects of fonts used in video media on elementary school students' readability and propose ideal fonts for them.
The number of elementary school students has been exploding in the Internet, and they have potential influences in future. Thus there is a need to identify the most effective fonts for them and efficiently apply them to classes.
Based on the styles of type discussed in the previous studies, the basic fonts of the Internet environment, and the emerging fonts that recently received great responses, the investigator examined the readability environments of Gulim, Dotum, Batang, Malgun Gothic, HamchoromDotum and HamchoromBatang with a focus on the font sizes.
In case of 13-point fonts for both Hangul and numbers, HamchoromDotum recorded the highest level of readability on both paper and monitor. In case of 12-point fonts, HamchoromDotum recorded the highest readability on monitor among all the grades. However, on paper, the fifth graders answered Malgun Gothic showed the highest readability, while the third graders HamchoromDotum.
The lower graders had the highest readability with HamchoromDotum because they preferred bolder and tidier fonts, whereas the upper graders chose Malgun Gothic whose environment was similar to that of Gulim compared to HamchoromDotum because they were more exposed to the conventional fonts and had a strong tendency of selecting familiar fonts among similar ones.
. Malgun Gothic had a little bit bigger font-stretch than HamchoromDotum. HamchoromDotum was bolder and more distinct and had a font-stretch closer to 1:0.7 paper than Malgun Gothic.
The most appropriate fonts for elementary school students are distinct, tidy, proper in boldness, highlighting the forms of letters and increasing the level of readability.
There is a need to make active research efforts on the readability of distinct groups such as elementary school students as well as adults to establish a standard font for video media.
