주변의 의미와 잠재성 -몸과 타자의 문제- = Meaning and Virtuality of Periphery -the Problems of Body and Other-

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

The main purpose of this paper is to present the positive meaning and virtuality of periphery, which can be sought not in the struggle for becoming center or in the direct critique of centre-periphery structure, but in the relations of periphery with outside or other. It is asserted that the positivity of periphery consists in its traits as the margin or border of existing system and its important role is to accept the outside and other so that there can be new changes in the system. I point out the limit of the perspective proposing the periphery heading for a center on the one hand, and discuss the problems of the view looking outside on the other hand. In the argument, Gayatri Spivak`s question Can the Subaltern Speak?, which depends on Jacques Derrida`s philosophy, plays an important role. Then, I turn over to elaborate how the efforts to overcome the limited view come to focus on the theme of body. It is explained that the main ground of philosophical attention on body is its openness toward outside, which is prior to the assimilation and domination of outside by consciousness. Finally, I propose the ethic of Emmanuel Levinas as the way to get over the problems of centre-periphery structure, because it gives more weight to the other who is weak and infinite at the same time. However, its positivity could be realized not by becoming another dominant thought but by deepening and reinforcing its status of periphery.
