Focusing on the record of Lineage Financial Management (門中遞掌記) ofthe Changhŭng Wi lineage, this research investigates the dynamics betweenfinancial management and lineage cohesion in late Chosŏn. The analysis revealsa notable shift in lineage operation: practical leadership was exercised not bythe head family (宗家), but by influential sub-branch lineages possessingsuperior socio-economic standing. This pattern suggests that lineage managementprioritized pragmatic considerations of influence and capability over ideologicalprescriptions of genealogical hierarchy. Financially, the lineage adopted flexibleresource mobilization to prioritize ancestral rites, viewing these ancestorcommemoration projects as strategic investments to enhance their elite identity.
This Korean case reflects a unique tension; despite an ideological emphasis onthe lineal heir, the actual operations of late Chosŏn lineages were oftendominated by powerful branches when the primary line lacked the materialmeans to lead.
