A Study on the On-line Service of Oral History Archives

Initial studies on oral history focused on producing and collecting oral history archives, and thus usually scientific methodology of collecting oral history archives was performed. Recently, researchers are much interested in utilization and service to utilize accumulated oral history archives variously, and provide for more users, and also they consider on-line service of oral history archives according to the change of information service environment applying internet.
The concept and range of oral history archives addressed in previous oral history field were limited to the process of performing actual interview from among the process of collecting oral history archives, and to subsequently produced and collected oral history archives. However, with considering that oral history archives in the stage of planning showed the direction and propensity of overall process well, this study defined oral history archives as the concept comprehending all the oral history archives produced and collected in the process of collecting oral history archives from the stage of planning to the stage of interview through the stage of arrangement.
Unlike common records, oral history archives have special features such as orality, subjectivity, individuality, mutuality, unique, limited, and diversity of recording media. Additionally, it is important to understand the contextual relation of oral history archives. The context of oral history archives can include the context of oral history contents in addition to the connection with records produced in the process of performing work function of agency which performs collecting oral history archives, and the connection between oral history archives formed in the process of collecting oral history archives.
The necessity of on-line service of oral history archives is summarized as follows:
First, on-line service of oral history archives can promote the oral history archives possessed by relevant agency to the outside, and provide users more convenience. Second, on-line service of oral history archives can contribute to the revitalization of the study of oral history using oral history archives. Third, on-line service of oral history archives raises the public recognition of oral history archives. Fourth, now it is difficult for agency and organization which treat oral history archives to prepare the environment for coping with off-line users, and information has not been smoothly shared between competent organizations which treat oral history archives.
However, it is not desirable to emphasize technical convenience and useful approach of on-line service. It is required to consider the identity of oral history archives based on the context of oral history archives first, and also to apply the merit of on-line service.
This study reviewed the present status, and implemented comparative analysis of the characteristics and limit with the case of 6 domestic and foreign agencies which performed on-line service of oral history archives. As the result of reviewing domestic and foreign cases, for domestic cases, the on-line service system of oral history archives was unsatisfactory, and oral history archives and information provided were passive as compared with foreign cases. Therefore, in Chapter 4, this study emphasizes that the context of oral history archives has an important role and function in on-line service of oral history archives by researching the plan for on-line service of oral history archives based on the context of oral history archives.
