This study aims to enable the visually impaired to move to their destination safely by unaided ambulation through transportation centering on a subway system, and this study is concerned with how to offer important information through signs in the lives of the visually impaired.
As the primary study for attaining the above goal, the study conducted an investigative analysis focusing on convenient facilities, specifically, for a subway the directional information facility for the disabled from the perspective of the visually impaired. First, the study looked into the current general directional signs for the visually impaired; and second, proposed solutions and problems through the direct investigation and analysis of the directional signs of Busan subway based on the current situation. The directional signs implied in this study mean a voice directional sign and a tactual directional sign. Also, it means all relevant facilities such as Braille blocks and Braille buttons as well as a means of delivery using a voice by an electric sound facility including a speaker, which leads the visually impaired to move from a subway space to their destination. In detail, the study used the method of carrying out an investigative analysis of Busan subway stations (Seomyeon and Suyeong) in Korea, concerning the ambulatory characteristics of the visually impaired, criteria for facilities, and the current facilities. Regarding the research contents, the study aimed at sound, barriers, flooring facilities, Braille blocks, signals, tactual map, light, and smell, which may be factors related to the movement of the visually impaired.
First, as a result of the primary investigation of the signs exclusively for the disabled in Busan subway stations (Seomyeon and Suyeong), it was pointed out that facilities and information for the visually impaired to move by subway were not satisfactory. Also, it was discovered that the sign expression of tactual information and voice information, which may be the focal point of visual information for the visually impaired, were not systematic unlike those for the non-disabled, and the system of information recognition was not in detail.
