The aim of the study was to evaluate changes of skeletal maturity, bone mineral density and physical fitness in obese female adolescents for 3 years. A total of 58 female adolescents (aged 12 and 13 years) participated in this study. Body weight and body height were measured and skeletal maturity was assessed. Bone mineral density were measured by DXA, Physical fitness parameters were measured, Results of the study showed that bone age are more advanced than chronolgoical age in both groups at 12 years. However, obese female adolescents (14.2 yrs) were advanced than non-obese adolescents (13.3 yrs) at 13 years. Whole body bone mineral density increased significantly in both groups. Obese adolescents had higher femoral and lumber bone mineral density than control group at 13 years old. Physical fitness improved significantly for flamingo balance (p<0.01), plate tapping (p<0.001), sit and reach (p<0.001), grip strength (p<0.001) in both groups with age. Control group showed better performance on endurance run compared to obese female adolescents. In conclusion, obesity is associated with skeletal maturity, and bone mineral density and physical fitness in female adolescents. However, further longitudinal study including many participants from several schools areas should be performed to be generalized for our results.
