The purpose of this study is to explore the Magisterial teaching on the issue of youth and sexuality through the lens of Julia Kristeva’s concept of sémanalyse and herethics. By means of the notion of the “subject-in-process” (sujet en procès), Kristeva demonstrates that sexuality is not a fixed essence but is gradually constituted within the process of development, and contends that both signification and socialization are operative even at the semiotic stage prior to the symbolic order. Her articulation of herethics advances a “third way” beyond the limits of traditional feminism by foregrounding the recovery of maternity and an ethics grounded in affectivity. Such a perspective opens the possibility of reinterpreting recent magisterial documents of the Church, which have increasingly underscored the importance of emotional sex education.
This study undertakes an analysis of six major ecclesial documents published between 1968 and 2019 in light of Kristeva’s thought. Through this examination, it becomes evident that the understanding and cultivation of adolescent sexual development cannot be confined merely to the level of knowledge. The study affirms that the Church’s approach to adolescent sex education must move beyond the mere presentation of norms or transmission of information, advancing instead toward an integral formation that encompasses affective relationships and the dimension of maternity. This trajectory converges with Kristeva’s insight into the semiotic dimension—that pre-linguistic, relational, and affective energies play a constitutive role in subject formation. Accordingly, the present work seeks to foster a critical dialogue between the Church’s documents and Kristeva’s theoretical framework, arguing that adolescent sex education must transcend purely normative instruction and embrace themes of personal formation and communal maturity.
