This thesis aims to deeply examine the narrative representation of mother-daughter relationships in three representative Taiwanese family films Lonely Taste( , 2020),The Falls( , 2021), — 孤味 瀑布 andAmerican Girl( , 2021) and their socio-cultural 美國女孩 — implications. To this end, this study utilizes a combination of text analysis, feminist film theory, semiotics, and narratological approaches to explore how mother-daughter relationships are reconstructed and re-signified within the broader context of changes in Taiwan's family structure, the awakening of gender consciousness, and social transitions in contemporary Taiwanese society.
The introduction of the thesis reviews the process of Taiwan's modernization and the resulting changes in family functions and structures, as well as the evolution of gender roles. It particularly discusses how the "role of motherhood" embodies a dual tension between tradition and modernity at the intersection of family ethics and social norms. The main body of the thesis then proceeds with individual case analyses of the three films.Lonely Tasteconstructs a narrative of family memory and intergenerational healing through funeral rites and object symbols, revealing the conflicting tension between maternal responsibility and personal emotions. The Fallsportrays the collapse and reconstruction of the mother-daughter symbiotic relationship from a psychosocial perspective through the dual narrative of a confined space and mental illness during the COVID-19 pandemic. Meanwhile,American Girlpresents the healing potential of the mother-daughter relationship through narrative strategies of physical touch, emotional expression, and language recovery, centered on the identity confusion and emotional disconnection of a return migrant mother-daughter pair in the context of the SARS period.
Furthermore, this study compares and analyzes the patterns of mother-daughter relationships, the reconstruction of maternal images, and emotional narrative strategies across the three films, identifying similarities and differences in terms of genre characteristics, narrative structure, visual techniques, and symbolic systems. Through this, the thesis aims to elucidate how these works reflect Taiwan's family values, emotional structures, and gender consciousness, and how mother-daughter relationships function as both a "vessel of emotion" and a medium for socio-cultural transfer, embodying power dynamics and emotional tensions within the family.
This thesis contributes to expanding theoretical interest in micro-level emotional structures, such as mother-daughter relationships, in the field of Chinese-language family film studies. By combining cultural, semiotic, and emotional analysis, it aims to build an academic framework that bridges three key themes: family ethics, gender power, and identity formation. Additionally, it provides a pathway for future analysis in Asian women’s film studies.
