This article discusses the development of two major approaches in the study of youth culture in UK, by reviewing and reconceptualizing the concerned literature. It compares the two approaches and explores the possibility of a productive dialogue between them. In so doing, recent trends and topics in the study of youth culture will be introduced and examined. While the subcultural approach concerns resistant subcultural features of youth culture, the macro approach tends to analyze the reality of young people's cultural condition at a macro level by focusing on their transition into adulthood. The development of the two approaches show difference in understanding of youth culture, in terms of the level of analysis, the object of analysis, and the objective of research. Debates between two approaches imply that youth research need to articulate structural factors with cultural factors, and to consider young people not only as the objects of youth policy but rather the participants and producers of culture.
