This thesis aims to research on the development of view of history on Korean literature and the direction of Korean literature, according to the times change. Under the Japanese colonial rules, researchers expressed their critical mind on the writing of the history of Choson Literature. There were three different ways of writing the history of Choson literature during the Japanese colonial rule. Those were the writing the history of Choson literature as the history of national spirit by An Hwak, the history of Choson literature as the philology by Kim Tae-Joon, and the history of literature as scientific positivism by researchers studied with KyeongSeong Empire University. After the independence from the Japanese occupation, the history of Korean literature was mainly compiled for the purpose of college students education. The prominent books concerning the history of Korean literature are the history of Choson Literature[Choson Munhaksa] by Lee Myeong Seon and the history of Korean literature[KookMunhaksa] by Cho Yun Jae. Cho aimed to write the history of Korean literature as the development of national spirit, but Lee tried to write the history of Korean literature based on the socialist literary view. In fact, we need to write the history of Korean literature with balanced attitude toward these two different views of literary history. But since the division of the country, the researchers emphasized the need of objectiveness studying on literature in South Korea, and subjective interpretation in North Korea. The different circumstances of South and North Korea gave birth to the different attitudes toward literature. But the critical mind toward social functions of literature are in common. There were the compilation of Korean literature since 1980s and 1990s. It was the compilation of Korean literature[HanKook Munhak Tongsa] by Cho Dong-il in South Korea, but it still was absence of view of literary history. And also, there are compilation of Choson literature in North Korea, but it also was distorting literary history.
