레비나스와 정치적인 것(2) - 레비나스의 마르크스 = Levinas and the Political(2) - Levinas on Marx

국문 초록 (Abstract)

이번 논문은 ‘레비나스와 정치적인 것’이란 주제 하에서 이뤄지는 2번째 작업으로서, 마르크스에 대한 레비나스의 이해를 살피는 데 그 목적이 있다. 일견, 이 두 사상가를 함께 사유하는 것이 낯설게 느껴질 수도 있겠다. 레비나스의 주안점이 정치와 역사 너머의 타자 및 그 절대적 타자와 맺는 책임의 관계에 있는 데 반해, 마르크스는 현대 자본주의 사회 및 그 핵심인 계급 착취의 과정을 분석하고 계급 구조의 변화가 어떻게 사회의 거대한 질적 변화를 추동하는지를 보여주고자 했기 때문이다. 레비나스가 서구 존재론 일반에 대한 급진적인 비평가라면, 마르크스는 자본주의라는 구체적 존재론에 대한 급진적인 비평가라 할 수 있을 것이다. 그렇다면 존재론에 대한 레비나스의 비판이 자본주의 근대성에 대한 마르크스의 비판과 공명할 순 없을까? 우리는 본 논문을 통해, 레비나스가 마르크스를 어떻게 이해하고 있는지를, 더 정확히는 레비나스의 사유가 어떤 면에서 마르크스의 사유와 닿아 있는지를 검토할 것이다. 이렇게 레비나스의 사유를 마르크스의 사유와 관련짓는 것은 그들 사이의 유사점을 밝히는 일일 뿐 아니라 더욱이는 레비나스의 사유가 어떻게 또 어떤 방식으로 마르크스의 사유를 이어받고 또 새롭게 갱신할 수 있는지를 이해하려는 시도이기도 하다. 우리는 자유주의 너머, 이론 너머의 실천이라는 2가지 관점에서 레비나스의 마르크스를 검토할 것이다. 그런 후 레비나스와 마르크스를 토대로 자신의 철학을 개진했던 해방철학자 엔리케 두셀의 논의를 간단히 살핌으로써, 레비나스적 마르크스주의가 어떤 모습일 수 있는지를 가늠해 볼 것이다. 우리가 주목하는 대목은 두셀이 레비나스의 윤리와 마르크스의 실천을, 레비나스의 존재론 비판과 마르크스의 자본주의 비판을 연결 지어 사유한다는 점이다. 우리는 두셀이 강조하는 마르크스의 ‘산 노동’개념을 고찰함으로써, 레비나스의 윤리적 사유가 마르크스의 정치적 사유를 새롭게 해석하고 이해하는 데 기여하는 방식의 일면을 확인할 수 있을 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

This paper is the second in a series on “Levinas and the Political”, and aims to examine Levinas’s understanding of Marx. It may seem strange to think of these two thinkers together. This is because Levinas’s focus was on the relationship of responsibility to the Other and its absolute alterity beyond politics and history, while Marx wanted to analyze modern capitalist society and the processes of class exploitation at its core, and show how changes in class structure drive massive qualitative changes in society. If Levinas is a radical critic of Western ontology in general, then Marx is a radical critic of the specific ontology of capitalism. Can Levinas’s critique of ontology resonate with Marx’s critique of capitalist modernity? In this paper, we will examine how Levinas understands Marx, or more precisely, in what ways Levinas’s thought touches Marx’s thought. Relating Levinas’s thought to Marx's is not only an attempt to reveal the similarities between them, but also to understand how and in what ways Levinas’s thought can inherit and renew Marx’s thought. We will examine Levinas’s Marx from two perspectives: beyond liberalism and practice beyond theory. Finally, we will briefly examine the work of Enrique Dussel, a liberation philosopher who drew on Levinas and Marx to develop his own philosophy, to get a sense of what Levinasian Marxism might look like. We will note that Dussel connects Levinas’s ethics with Marx’s praxis, and Levinas’s critique of ontology with Marx’s critique of capitalism. By examining Dussel’s emphasis on Marx’s concept of “living labor”, we will see some of the ways in which Levinas’s ethical thought contributes to a new interpretation and understanding of Marx’s political thought.
