This study investigates effective ways to develop English speaking skills. For this purpose, 95 6th grade students were divided into two groups. 47 students in the experimental group were taught through collaborative interaction using sentence frames while 48 students in the control group had regular classes based on the national curriculum. The collaborative interaction experimental group practiced key expressions with their peers employing collaborative learning strategies. They also used sentence frames when they practiced the key expressions. For 13 weeks, the students had two 40 minute classes per week. To see the effect of the method, a mock test of the English Speaking Proficiency Test (ESPT) Junior Level 2 was administered and the data of pre- and post- were analyzed. The results of the study indicate that collaborative interaction using sentence frames had a positive effect on developing students’ speaking ability in terms of fluency and comprehension.
