한국교회와 청교도 설교

국문 초록 (Abstract)

오늘날 한국 개신교회에는 복음 선포가 희소했던 중세 말 로마 가톨릭 교회 의 상황과 유사하게 설교가 예배의 중심에서 점점 밀려나고 있다. 이와 달리 청교도는 설교를 예배 구성의 핵심으로 여겼는데, 그것은 설교가 바로 하나님 께서 우리의 구원을 위해 친히 제정하신 수단이라는 인식 때문이었다. 청교도 설교는 성경 중심의 설교, 적용을 중시한 설교, 설교자의 인격이 담 긴 설교, 그리고 성령님을 의지한 설교였다. 청교도 설교의 이런 특징은 침체에 빠진 오늘날 한국교회 강단에 유익한 자극이 될 뿐 아니라 한국교회 강단이 활 로를 모색하는데 적절한 지침이 될 수 있을 것이다. 그 지침들은 다음과 같다. 첫째, 성경 중심으로 설교해야 한다. 성경의 중심 주제들을 포괄하는 설교 를 통해 예수 그리스도의 복음을 온전히 드러내는데 전력했던 청교도 설교자 들처럼 성경 중심으로 설교해야 한다. 둘째, 청중을 고려해 설교해야 한다. 성 경 본문에 대한 충실한 주해를 바탕으로 교리를 제시하고 그 교리가 실제적으 로 어떻게 적용될 수 있는가를 깊이 고민했던 청교도 설교자들처럼, 청중을 배 려한 설교를 해야 한다. 셋째, 설교자의 인격을 담아 설교해야 한다. 가르침과 일치된 삶을 살기 위해 몸부림치며 목사의 인격이 담긴 설교를 지향했던 청교 도의 자세는 오늘날 우리 목사들이 배우고 따라야 할 가장 중요한 자세라 할 수 있다. 넷째, 성령님을 의지해 설교해야 한다. 청교도 설교자들은 청중을 감 동시키고 그 영혼을 변화시키는 생명력 있는 말씀 선포는 성령님께서 역사하 실 때만 가능함을 확신하고 있었다. 전자 매체 과잉으로 인해 영혼이 더욱 피 폐해져 가는 오늘날 우리 설교자들은 청교도 선배들보다 훨씬 더 간절히 성령 님의 역사하심을 사모하고 간구해야 할 것이다.

다국어 초록 (Multilingual Abstract)

In Korean Protestant churches preaching is gradually being relegated from the center of the worship to the margin. Such circumstances resemble those of the late medieval Roman Catholic Church where the proclamation of the Gospel was scarce. Unlike this, Puritans took preaching as the core of the worship. For they duly recognized that preaching was the method which God had personally established for the sake of our salvation. The characteristics of the Puritan preaching were the Bible-centered, application-oriented, character-laden, and the Holy Spirit-reliant. These characteristics can become not only instructive stimuli to the pulpit of the Korean churches, but also directions for groping for a way-out of the pulpit. Those directions are as follows. Firstly, our preaching should be the Bible-centered. Following the Puritans who devoted their best efforts to revealing the Gospel of Jesus Christ through sermons containing the essential themes of the Bible, our preaching should concentrate on the key themes of the Bible. Secondly, we should consider the understanding and circumstances of the audience seriously in our preaching. Like the Puritans who endeavored to apply their messages to the lives of their audience after presenting proper doctrines based on the exegesis of the text, we must preach in consideration of our hearers’ understanding. Thirdly, we have to proportion our lives to our preaching. We have to learn and follow the posture of the Puritans who not only struggled to proportion their lives to their teachings, but also aimed at preaching laden with their character. Fourthly, we should rely on the Holy Spirit when we preach. Puritan preachers held a strong conviction of the work of the Holy Spirit who enabled them to preach viable messages that touched and changed the heart of every hearer. The preachers at the present time help and care for the people whose spirits are much more exhausted through being exposed to excessive media. Therefore the preachers in these days should long and pray for the work of the Holy Spirit more eagerly than our Puritan forefathers.
