This study aimed to examine the participation motivations and perceptions of guardians who participated in making activity-based programs in science museums with their children.
A survey was conducted with 143 guardians who participated in exhibition-linked making activity-based programs at a science museum. The collected data were analyzed using frequency analysis, percentage analysis, mean analysis based on a four-point Likert scale, and chi-square (χ²) tests. In addition, in-depth interviews with selected participating guardians were conducted to complement the quantitative findings.
The main findings are as follows.
First, the analysis of participation motivations revealed that the primary reason for participation was to enhance children’s scientific curiosity. Other factors, including interest in making activities, opportunities for family interaction, and access to experiences not readily available in school settings, were also identified. This suggests that guardians’ participation reflects a combination of educational expectations and emotional values.
Second, the analysis of guardians’ perceptions indicated that making activity-based programs were recognized as meaningful educational activities that support children’s scientific interest, conceptual understanding, retention of learning, and development of achievement and self-esteem. The high mean scores across most items suggest that participating guardians evaluated these programs positively in both cognitive and affective domains.
Third, regarding perceptions related to participation experiences, guardians tended to recognize themselves not as passive companions but as active co-learners who engage in the learning process with their children. They also showed positive perceptions of increased interaction and strengthened emotional bonds with their children.
In conclusion, making activity-based programs in science museums were found to hold educational value in fostering positive perceptions of science learning and enhancing family interaction from the perspective of participating guardians. This study provides meaningful implications for the design and implementation of family-participatory maker programs that actively incorporate guardians in science museums and other informal educational settings.
